pea soup

In a disaster situation OR with the hyper inflation that has already started, cooking time becomes an issue.  The smaller that you butcher meat, vegetables grains ect, the faster it will cook, RIGHT? And there for the less it will cost in energy / time to cook that food.

With that in mind, Beans especially those that you have had stored for a long time take awhile to cook. The older they are the longer it takes to cook and get soft, some don’t get soft even after hours of soaking/cooking. We have all experienced this. BUT the smaller the pieces, the less time it takes to cook.

Do you need a grain grinder to process grains, beans ect? While it does help you can also use your blender or one of those ‘magic bullet’ small grinders/puree devices. Put just a small amount of grain, beans, OR dehydrated product like carrots, celery, onions can be turned into flour. As you get more experience with the process you will find the best amount to process at a time. Many people then run the flour though a flour sifter or a screen sieve to have consistent sized flour pieces.

Once you have your ‘flour’ made and in whatever container you will store it in short term, you can start mixing your recipes. Personally I measure out the whole grain/beans to start with and then grind it all together for the batch of whatever I am making.

Here is one recipe I am experimenting with.

WWII German military “iron ration”

anything with bean flour… in large heavy pot, try minced bacon 1/2 lbs fried until mostly crisp, add one onion to taste minced fine, cook well caramelized then add pea flour until you have a stiff dough. roll into a sausage roll with waxed paper. This will store good at room temp for a few months… at point of use pinch off however much you want and add to boiling water, stir and you have pea soup in minutes. Serve with crackers. You  can add carrot flour too.

A variant is to take ham ½ lbs minced and add a half cup of lard and cook as above.

What are your thoughts and or hints along this line?

Baby formula

We all have heard of the baby formula shortage by now…   some say it is intentional, others say it is just happenstance. I don’t know for sure which it is and don’t really care. The important part is that there is a shortage. BTW Breast feeding is best as it helps pass on Mom’s immunities and is always ready for the baby.

Home made baby formula from the 50-60s

13 oz [give or take an oz – so 12-14 oz]  evaporated WHOLE milk – depends on the size of can you get.—you can also use powdered milk and follow the directions on that product.

20 oz water [distilled is best IF you have it] in hot weather some use the home made re-hydration formula it is kinda like pedialyte or Gatorade] at http://www.preparesurvivethrive.us/re-hydration-drink/ posted below

2 level tablespoons [or 1 oz] of Karo syrup for the carbohydrates AND the Karo syrup was added because evaporated milk would cause constipation without it. The amount of syrup was adjusted according to the contents of the baby’s diaper.

Heat to 160 F then pour into 6-8 bottles and refrigerate until needed.

Feed every 3-4 hours or on demand.

My wife and I used to be in the industrial baby business [she did NICU and I dealt with the mommies OB] For the ones that planned on formula and for the ones who wanted/needed formula back up, We taught similar to this recipe and IF the baby needed extra calories we would add Olive oil up to a Tbsp [15 cc] per bottle. The kids seemed to do at least as well on this as the ‘regular store bought formulas – YMMV and when in doubt, discuss it with YOUR healthcare provider as this is meant only to spark discussion and learning.

This is about the best all-around recipe for Re-Hydration drink—- this replaces Pedialyte and Gatorade / sports drinks, a lot cheaper too.
Mix as follows and you can pre-mix into unit dose packets for use while you are on the move.

In a 1 L container mix the following
1/2 teaspoon salt substitute KCl aka NU-salt
1 pinch Epson salt MaSo4–  optional add ½ tsp Himalayan salt
2 tablespoon sugar [omit to use in Jell-O, formula or instant potatoes]
Kool-aid to taste    [omit to use in Jell-O, formula or instant potatoes]
Chill and serve —

BTW, Kool-aid comes in a colorless version too for when the person is vomiting. .

It is always better to prevent de-hydration by drinking water. How much should you drink a day? It is NOT the oft repeated 8, 8 ounce glasses.  For the basic amount take your weight in pounds and divide by 2 = the number of ounces you should drink a day. This amount assumes that you are sitting at a desk. The best way to know that you are drinking enough is to check your urine. Normal healthy urine is clear to straw color with no odor. In babies we like to see 8-12 wet diapers a day. Most adults should do the same ahhh EXCEPT hopefully without the need for diapers.

Are there other recipes? Yup, just like IVs you can mix this to replace electrolytes that lab work shows are missing.

Bikes of war

Buffalo Soldiers Bicycled 132 Miles Through Yellowstone In 1896

The Buffalo Soldiers who made up the volunteer Bicycle Corps of the 25th Infantry Regiment bicycled 132 Miles Through Yellowstone in 1896.

The 25th regiment was based at Fort Missoula beginning in 1888. The 25th was one of four regiments (also including the 24th Infantry and the 9th and 10th Cavalry) that were made up of Black soldiers — these were the Buffalo Soldiers. With the growing popularity of bicycling Major General Nelson A. Miles, as Army Commander-in-Chief, recommended that one full regiment be equipped with bicycles in 1892…pictured here is the Buffalo Solider Bicycle Corps that was formed in response to this order.

On Aug 25, 1896, The Regiment set out to tour Yellowstone. A trip that covered over 130 miles and included some incredibly rough terrain.

Spalding Military Bikes

The Spalding military bicycles (which were donated by the company at no cost to the military) were furnished with steel rims, tandem spokes, extra-heavy side-forks and crowns, gear cases, luggage carriers, frame cases, brakes, and Christy saddles. They were geared to 68 inches and weighed 32 pounds. The average weight of the bicycles, packed, was about 59 pounds.

There were a variety of items that were issued to the soldiers that they would have carried in their pack. From personal grooming items to playing cards and other items that will help entertain soldiers not to mention the gear needed to maintain and repair their bikes.

A Quote From Lt. James A. Moss

A Quote From Lt. James A. Moss

“The bicycle, as a machine for military purposes, was most thoroughly tested under all possible conditions, except that of being under actual fire. The Corps went through a veritable campaign, suffering from thirst, hunger, and the ill effects of alkali water, cold, heat and loss of sleep. A number of times we went into camp wet, muddy, hungry and tired …. Much of the time the roads were so bad that the Corps had to dismount and push their wheels along railroad tracks.”

The following is our part….

Observations – covering 50 miles a day is a good rate of travel across country. It also translates into a good way to patrol your AO or to run a courier system between towns or posts.

Obviously terrain and load would be limiting factors along with unfriendly action in the AO. Back in the 1960-70s the Viet Cong and NVA  transported TONS of munitions and other supplies via bicycle along the Ho Chi Mien trail from the north into South Viet Nam. Most of the time they used single bikes loaded with whatever and pushed them.  Often for the heavier loads they had made bars which tied 2 bikes together so they could carry larger payloads.  After the payloads were delivered they would ride the bikes back to the north and repeat the process. They often used bikes / riders as couriers between units.

Often the civilian police forces in this US of A during ‘good’ weather have officers patrolling the streets on bikes [and motorcycles] along with the standard patrol vehicles.

This helps the police quietly roll up on crimes in progress. The officers get to know their patrol areas better AND get to know the people better too! Not only does this save on fuel costs it helps the officers to be more physically fit which is a win-win all the way around.

The Viet Cong used a system of bars which tied 2 bikes together at a set spacing which also kept them from shifting side to side or falling over. There were also bars which formed the load platform. Most of them as I recall had wing nuts to make it easier to adjust and assemble/disassemble them in the field. The front end could be a vertical X and the back end a horizontal V

Given the long history of bicycles and the even LONGER history of war, bikes make good logical sense to include in any [almost any] survival plan for long term transportation of people and materials. The bikes in addition to the following ones can also be configured for medical staff and used as ambulances.

Let us make 2022 a better year. Stay safe, healthy AND stand for what you believe in.

shortages 2021+

2019 was not a good years for crops…   late spring and an early winter cut the harvest in the us by some 40% and there was a reported die off of pigs.
2020 also known as BLURSday because it is all a blur with the human malware program 19 which shut everly thing done..   Things did not get planted on time IF at all. MANY tons of live stock were killed and buried because the processing plants did not have staff to process them, and besides that most eateries were closed to indoor eating and most did not have drive ups. 2021 has not any better.
Stores are short of supplies enough that most have noticed it. Many stores are still limiting how much you can buy per day of some products. Some food companies have suspended operations due to lack of food and other needed supplies for operation—  see attached letter from AUGASON FARMS which is one of the MAJOR suppliers of long term storage foods.
Incoming shipments are having to wait off shore due to a reported lack of dock workers. Because of this a lot of ‘fresh’ foods are rotting on the ships.
AS IF all this were not bad enough, prices for what is available are going UP!  Inflation ya’know …
What to do….    stock up what you can reasonably use. Get what shelf stable food you can and safely store it. IF you will need shoes anytime in the next few years, buy them now. Same with tires and oil for your car.
DO NOT do like some did when that pipeline was shut down and pump GAS into plastic bags like one video on the net showed one female doing.
IF you have not already done so…   Pick a spot in your yard and start right now planning next years garden! IF you can, get most of the seeds you will need NOW along with any tools. Plant a food forest even if you don’t think YOU will be around to eat from it…  your kids will be [or grand kids].
Keep a journal of daily happenings, your thoughts, stuff you have learned and stuff you want to learn. Include in your journal a daily list or log of EVERYTHING you use/consume…    over a period of time your come to KNOW how much of what you need to be stocking.
Pray for guidance in all that you do…

total solar eclipse

Normally travel time between Casper and Cheyenne WY is about 2.5 hours….   Many reports were that after the party broke up in Casper [when the watch party was over] it took 12-14 hours to travel the same distance due to traffic. Except for the event and the HIGH number of watchers, there was no other reason for the slow down- no traffic accident ect…   Those who made plans to stay in Casper that night found that the trip home the NEXT day did not experience any delay getting home.

The point being, PLAN routes with alternates, Have fuel and other supplies on hand to deal with most situations.

###

On Monday, August 21, 2017, a total solar eclipse of the sun darkened the late morning skies of a large swath of the United States, including Wyoming. The center of the path of the eclipse, meaning the place where it’s the darkest, ran right through the middle of the Cowboy State.

The path went through the center of Wyoming from just south of Yellowstone National Park, straight over Casper, Wyoming, and then into Nebraska north of Cheyenne near Torrington. The eclipse began at 10:22 AM Mountain Time, and the darkest part of the event passed over Casper at 11:42 AM.

Being in the direct path of the event brought thousands of people to Wyoming that August day in 2017. Not only because total solar eclipses are rare events and have hardcore fans that travel the world to experience and document them. It was also a big deal because according to Space.com, “…it’s rare for one to be visible to so many people across such a populated swath of the planet.”

“At times, Cheyenne was looking more like Denver with traffic congestion along Interstate 25,” is what The Associated Press said about that day in Wyoming. More than half a million vehicles drove into, and back out of, Wyoming that day.

HEAT WAVE 2021

HEAT WAVE 2021

This year has been a bit HOT. Yesterday it was 96 degrees F which broke the record for the last almost 60 years. Other areas record were  up to 107F

This week there is a rodeo in town and listening to the scanner for medical calls the incidence of heat related injuries is high as well.

The sad thing about heat injuries is that by and large they ARE preventable!!!

A young Marine that I know very well recently told me that 2 GALLONS of water a day was just NOT enough!

Side note, at some airports when the temperature gets above 120F, they ground the airplanes because the air is not thick enough for safe flight.

SNOW and supplies

Blog SNOW and supplies

In March 2021 our area had a bit of snow….   The weather service had been forecasting this  bit of snow for well over a week. So this was or at least should not have been a surprise. We ALL knew it was coming and the projected amounts. Hummm   OK by the time the snow stopped our area had OVER 30 inches of snow. The storm lasted a few days. During this time we monitored the area’s communication systems. At one point our lights flickered and came back on. A few blocks over the lights went out for about 36 hours.

Some of the calls for services made good sense. In the areas that lost power people were calling for oxygen supplies because their oxygen concentrators were not running at home. Most folks have enough bottled oxygen to last 12 hours and then they are gasping like fish out of water. Trust me this is NOT fun!  SO, people were out on snowmobiles and snow cats getting bottled oxygen to those in need.    Many home bound people were stuck as their care givers could not get in to tend to them. Others who had 24 hour care, the staff were stuck there as they could not get out and relief staff could not get in. in at least one case someone died at home and the family had to wait with the body for …. Too long.

Like I said, I CAN understand this.

What I can NOT understand are the people who did not have even a weeks worth of insulin and other life sustaining medications on hand. Many types of insulin are available over the counter in most states.  Generally you can refill your medications a few days early and over time build up a small stockpile of you life sustaining medications. DO NOT ask for CDS/narcotics early nor extra.

People were calling EMS because they were out of insulin and other things…    SAD that people don’t or can’t think ahead.

My building was literally snowed in for many days, even the post office was closed. Of course we did not expect to get deliveries anyway we could not get out and they could not get in. one of the tenants has a life alert button and some how it accidentally got activated. It took EMS almost 2 hours to travel what is normally a 10 minute drive. They had 2 snow plows clearing the roads for them to get in. only to find that it was a false alarm. This sort of thing happens.

Crime was WAY DOWN that week.

There was still snow drifts 3 weeks after the snow stopped. Many roads remained closed for over a week and many that were ‘open’ only had one lane of travel. Only the main roads were  mostly open.

Neighbors helped each other.  A friend after shoveling out her driveway, cleared the walkway for an 80 year old woman who lived down the street form her and then she dug out an old couples vehicle because she knew that they had doctors appointments to get to later that week. She did not have to help those old folks BUT she is a good person and wanted to help out.  The next day there were 6 missionaries who had cleared the walks in their neighborhood and went to the senior apartments and cleared their walkways and dug out their cars.

Lessons learned.  Many times you are on your own IE YOU are your own first responder. That is just life. Plan ahead.

When the weather people tell you a storm is coming- get ready!

You do not have to be a weather man to tell which way the wind is blowing stay alert to what is going on around you!

Talk to people and make friends. Get to know those around you – what their strengths are AND what their weaknesses are [and how YOU can help them]. Lone wolves are NOT normal and will die early on.

Remember ARK – Acts of Random Kindness are good in and of themselves. Be nice.

Stockholm

Stockholm

Welcome to Stockholm!

Random thoughts…

It has been about a year since masking and lockdowns began. It will only last 2 weeks to break the transmission of the DEADLY virus.  RIGHT??  It is just for now, not forever!…  and here we are a year later still basically locked down. True THEY are lightening the restrictions but are ready to clamp down again WHEN there is another wave OR when the program/virus mutates.

A friend of the group has a relative who was put in a nursing home / long tern care facility a few months prior to the release of the virus. The family was able to visit before the lock down started. Then the lock down started… While they were able to call on the phone often and did make use of video conferencing for many months, it is NOT the same as face to face visits. After 6 months of ‘solitary confinement’ er ahhhh I mean medical protective isolation it takes a toll on people. Last month the patient in the nursing home had quit eating and drinking. The family was gathered to say their good byes as she was expected to die soon. The family was ALLOWED to visit as a group face to face with the patient for most of the day. How nice of the facility to allow contact! During the visit she started feeling hungry and started eating and drinking again because the family was there and what do you do at social events? You eat. The family continued to vist over the next few days. Her condition improved so much that she was ‘out of the danger zone’ and continued to get stronger. While this is a good thing, the facility decided that because she was not going to die soon that she was healthy enough to lock her back down and bar the family from face to face contact.  Back to medical protective isolation.  SMH  So, how many have died this last year because they gave up hope? How many died of loneliness?  Hummm what does this have to do with history [if anything]? Kinda reminds one of the 1930s.

Insurance may not cover your death IF it was from an experimental drug ie the human mal-ware program 19 vaccine. There have been some reports [unconfirmed by me, do your own research and let us know what you find out] that death benefits have been withheld to some families over this.

Recently a group of citizens lead by an MD, filed a civil rights suite against several in state government over the mask mandate and lock downs. Will see how that pans out.  ********web site***********  miracles do happen as the governor has decided to lift the mask mandate next week and businesses are now headed to being normalized.

So to recap the last year or so, this disease was noticed, the press whipped up concern, governments around the world locked everything down [took away most of our liberties and isolated us for our own good] and now are slowly giving us stuff back. BUT reminding us that THEY can lock us all down again when the disease numbers spike! This is sounding familiar to me from history.

Stockholm syndrome  ***the following was excerpted from https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stockholm_syndrome

*** Stockholm syndrome is a condition in which hostages develop a psychological bond with their captors during captivity.[1] Emotional bonds may be formed between captors and captives, during intimate time together, but these are generally considered irrational in light of the danger or risk endured by the victims. Stockholm syndrome has never been included in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders or DSM, the standard tool for diagnostic of psychiatric illnesses and disorders, mainly due to the lack of a consistent body of academic research.[2][3][4] The syndrome is rare: according to data from the FBI about 5% of hostage victims show evidence of Stockholm syndrome.[5]

This term was first used by the media in 1973 when four hostages were taken during a bank robbery in Stockholm, Sweden. The hostages defended their captors after being released and would not agree to testify in court against them.[2] It was noted that in this case, however, the police were perceived to have acted with little care for the hostages’ safety,[6] providing an alternative reason for their unwillingness to testify. Stockholm syndrome is paradoxical because the sympathetic sentiments that captives feel towards their captors are the opposite of the fear and disdain which an onlooker might feel towards the captors.  ***

Well established examples of Stockholm syndrome …  military basic training   they break you down to rebuild you. Btw this is an example of a good thing as it gets you to be able to do more than you thought you could.

What other examples of Stockholm syndrome can you come up with?

What to do?

Chop wood and carry water.

Continue to prep. Finish planning your garden for this year AND get extra seeds! LEARN how to do things. Make friends. Write down your plans as you discuss them with your family.

Prices are going UP, get the durable goods and food you will need NOW. Get tools of your trade and extra ones NOW!   Get out of debt!!!!
