Discussion of the Emergency Kit for School Contents List what ever you decide to use to carry all this stuff in should be durable and easy to carry without using your hands.

In addition to helping to keep your kids comfortable should something happen at school it will also help impress upon them the idea that preparedness is a way of life. Size, items and amounts should be adjusted for the kid’s size and maturity.

• Water bottles, reusable, I recommend 3 L in 750ml or smaller increments
This amount will last for a while and is intended to be able to share if you have not been able to convince your friends to build a kit.

• 10 feet para cord x 3
This has many uses some of which include tying the door shut. This length pre-cut works great and this way you will not need a knife which most likely be prohibited.

• Deck of cards or other small activity
This will save your battery ;]

• Duct tape – Just because.

• Emergency blanket to stay warm and act like a pillow too.

• Emergency whistle -this is in addition to the one that should be on your person.

• Face masks – particulate to keep dust and bugs out of your lungs

• Family contact numbers this copy is in case you lose the one that should be on you.

• Feminine sanitary products – periods are bad enough, think if you start unexpectedly or in the middle of a lock down.

• Granola/protein bars – it makes the wait easier if you are not ‘starving’.

• Hand warmers – the power may go out or for use in first aid

• Hand-crank flashlight / am-fm radio with ear phone – in case it goes dark and to get news reports.

• hard candy and mints – morale buster and to ease a sore throat.

• Kleenex or roll of TP – blow your nose, ect

• Mini first aid kit (band aids, cravats x 4, ect ,) – obvious

• PB crackers or similar in hard plastic case [2,000 cal] the plastic case will protect the crackers

• spare phone charger and extension cord with a 3 way spliter x2 – obvious

• Wet wipes – to clean yourself and others wounds.

Dakin’s Solution

How to Make and Use Dakin’s Solution

Have you ever heard of Dakin’s Solution? In the medical field it is a common item for wound care. Dakin’s Solution, of course is the manufactured name from the person who invented it. Henry Drysdale Dakin was an English chemist who worked with amino acids and water analysis. He invented Dakin’s Solution when he was working at a temporary hospital in Compiegne, France in 1916 and invented it as a wound treatment. We have been using this for such a long time even if it is a generic we would still call it Dakin’s.

It is a solvent to dead cells and speeds up the separation of living and dead tissues when used to irrigate the wound. It does not sting or burn and has been credited with saving thousands of lives since World War I. During the Civil War more soldiers were lost to infection than gun shot wounds. I have personally used this solution when working as a Wound Care Nurse and know that it works very well for removing dead tissue and preventing infection. I put Dakin’s Solution on a gauze pad and wiped the wound, the combination of the solution and the motion of wiping removed the dead tissue and left the beefy red live cells clean. I would then put the solution on another gauze pad and dab onto the live cells as a protective layer to prevent infection. The wound was then ready to put on the dressing.

There are stronger solutions but they can damage the living cells or lose their potency in the presence of blood. Dakin’s Solution does neither. Dakin’s is effective against a broad spectrum of microorganisms including viruses, bacteria, yeasts, and fungi.

You can also make this solution at home with ingredients you already have on hand. This solution will be very valuable after a disaster, so make sure you print out this blog post and put it in your first aid kit. Also it would be a good idea to make it a few times to make sure you can and that you are not making it for the first time in an emergency situation. This solution is unstable and deteriorates after a week. If you haven’t used all of it by the end of the week then use it as a cleaner in the kitchen or bathroom instead of wasting it.

You can also use Dakin’s solution as a mouthwash when you have a dental abscess. But spit out the rest of the solution and do NOT swallow it.

Adverse side effects are:
pain
burning sensation
rash
itching sensation
the skin around the wound turns red and swells
development of hives or blisters
IF your patient develops any of these signs reduce the concentration of the solution.

Recipe
Full Strength 3 ounces [90 ml or cc] sodiumhypochlorate 5.25 to 6 % trade name Clorox. ONLY use pure sodiumhypochlorate without any scents or other additives! 32 ounces water (4 cups or 1 quart) if you use the metric system that would be 960 ml or cc. In this solution you could mix it in 1 liter of water. [by the way distilled water is best]

½ Strength 45 ml/cc or 1.5 ounces sodiumhypochlorate 5.25 to 6 %, to 1 quart or 1 liter of water.

¼ Strength 23 ml/cc sodiumhypochlorate 5.25 to 6 %, to 1 quart or 1 liter of water.

Add ½ teaspoon baking soda to any strength to buffer it to cut down on the stinging feel.

Instructions
⦁ Measure out 1 quart or 1 liter distilled water if available, tap water would work too. Pour into a clean pan.
⦁ Add ½ teaspoonful of baking soda to the water and heat until bubbles form or the baking soda is dissolved
which ever happens 1st, stirring helps the baking soda go into solution faster.
⦁ Place the cooled solution in a clean jar. The jar does not have to be STERILE.
⦁ Add sodiumhypochlorate/Clorox (whichever concentration you are making)
⦁ Close lid tightly and shake a few times.
⦁ Unopened jars can be stored for one month after you have prepared them.
⦁ Label the jar with what strength and the solution, date you made it and who made it. As an example –
Dakin’s solution full strength 1916-Jan-19 RBO

I am not a doctor and this is a homemade remedy intended for use only after SHTF. (so you know the saying) I recommend that you do your own research on anything that you read so you are assured of its use and the accuracy of the information provided. What works for one person does not necessarily work for another.

This will be good to know for a grid down or wilderness healthcare situation.

How to train toddlers in preparedness

How to train toddlers in preparedness

As I sit here cutting out memory games for church, I got to thinking that this is a good way to teach toddlers just about anything that you have pictures for. For example you could teach herbs, animals, fish, tools, prep supplies, cooking tools, etc.

All you need is a picture of an item and of course make 2 of them so the toddlers can match them, and write the name of the picture on it so that they get use to how the name looks and then when they match the items say what it is a few times. After that, they will tell YOU what it is. I would keep the cards to certain categories, like all animals or all herbs, etc. You could even put a front and back of the same item (for example an animal so the child would know it from either direction) on different squares for older toddlers or children to match. You could put a picture of an animal and its tracks/or poop [aka scat] for the older toddlers and children to match – this would work for adults who don’t know the information too.

Take card stock and draw 3” X 2” squares and draw or cut out printed pictures and place within the 3” X 2” space. After you make copies and cut the squares out you can either use as is or if you want to use for a long period of time like through multiple children, then take clear shelf paper and laminate them on both sides.

You can also do step training by using the same type cards. Use the same 3”X 2” cards and draw or cut out anywhere from 2-5 steps and what the process would look like in each step. These could be how to turn the water main off, what to do if you smell smoke in the house or how to change the batteries in your flashlight. As your toddler gets older you could add more steps like how build a fire or how to put up a tent. You only have to have 1 copy of each using this game.

So instead of matching just 2 cards you would have to match in order 3 or more. Cut the squares out and either use as is or laminate them for longer use.

You may want to consider putting a laminated copy of the whole procedure into your emergency binder and near the equipment too so that others will know what to do if you are not available.

Fire starter insert

Fire starter www.PrepareSurviveThrive.US
Gather tinder in a pile next to where you intend to start your fire. Use the driest material available. You should have 5 times more tinder and kindling ready than you think you will need. Unless you have extra hands available and foraging for fire wood – gather 5 times more of that than you think you will need for the night.

Lay your fire.

Pare a small pile of magnesium shavings – at least enough to cover a quarter. Use a sharp knife or other metal tool held at 90 degrees to the magnesium block. The magnesium shavings will burn extremely hot [over 3,000 degrees] and fast.
When ready strike the Ferro rod [flint] aiming the sparks toward the magnesium shavings.

To prevent serious injury and property damage: keep away from children, wear ANSI-approved safety goggles and heavy-duty work gloves during use, use as intended only, inspect before every use. Magnesium in solid form is safe do not pare shavings until ready to use. Clear ground of flammable material 5 feet around fire site. Do not leave fire unattended and be prepared to extinguish fire completely

Herbal seed package

Herbal seed package

Awhile back we were at a trade show having fun talking with people and seeing what everyone had. One of the venders BRETT at Farmer’s Daughter *below* who we have written about before had his long-term storage foods on display. Dona [the jelly lady] and I were talking and pacing –yes it was a quiet time of day- and ended up at Brett’s tables. One of the items that we looked at and discussed at length was a medicinal herbal ‘vault’ that had seed packages for the more common maladies. The seeds package is designed for after SHTF when modern medications will be in very short supply and you will need to grow your own.

Part of my observations was that people really should be buying TWO of the packs.

The reason for buying at least 2 of the kits is so that you can bury one in the back yard for later if you have a total crop failure and the other one to start growing and practicing with NOW while you have the chance to learn about the plants. Remember that we are PRE-paring for when things are SNAP [situation not as planned]. In the coming weeks we will have postings on the contents of the medicinal herbal package, common uses and growing tips.
The Farmer’s Daughter stocks great tasting food packaged for long term storage and it is rated to store for 25 years… I strongly suspect that the shelf life will actually be over double that if stored correctly.

magnesium fire starter

Safety issues in using the magnesium fire starter that we carry. Actually this started out as the package insert of the fire starter and then we decided to do a post on it.

If there is more than just you in your party you can assign someone to gather more wood while you tend to camp chores such as starting the fire, setting up camp and cooking. When someone is back in camp who can tend the fire you can go out and get other things that you need done such as gather water for cleaning or [gasp, is he really going to talk about this part?] go to the toilet.

Keep in mind that fire is a dangerous servant who will destroy you if you drop your guard.

Earning a living AMMO

Earning a living AMMO

Manufacture and reloading ammunition, you can do either ‘standard’ loads or the loads can be very customized. There are big factory operations to smaller “Mom & Pop” concerns. Both type of set ups can turn out high quality products.
Today we will focus on the smaller Mom and Pop type groups. This last weekend I had a chance to deal with 2 such organizations. I was pleasantly impressed with both of them.

1. John and Cindy Taylor of www.taylorammocompany.com are based in Wyoming. I have shot some of their ammo and it was a pleasure to do so. John is Retired USMC . The prices were very acceptable. I am comfortable in recommending them.

2. Bob and Laura Stahl of www.Coloradocustomcartridges.com are based in Colorado. I have not fired any of their products yet. I did have them work up a price for an old rifle / revolver combination that a friend has. The cartridge is out of production as far as I can tell. The price quote per box of 50 down sized rounds from another caliber with soft lead cast bullets was great. They would not be on this list unless I can recommend them.

Some of the advantages that I can see for making a living doing what they do include
A. Flexible hours so they can attend shows, kids / grandkids activities or doctor’s appointments.
B. Can’t sleep at night? Not a real issue, get up and work, then sleep in the next day if you need to.
C. Ready for a vacation? Make the arrangements and go. Combine that with going to shows.
D. There is ALWAYS a demand for ammo, until it gets banned and then there will be even more demand for it.
E. Attractive tax benefits to having a business == discuss this with your accountant.

You don’t have an accountant? We can highly recommend McGee Hearne & Paiz LLP 307-634-2151 or 307-637-2617 are their Cheyenne Wyoming phone numbers according to the June 2014 DEXKNOWS.com phone book. Even if you don’t live in nor near Cheyenne they have contacts all over and can refer you to a good accountant.

For the hobbyist reloader check out any of the books put out by the NRA or take a class on reloading. I am sure that either of the 2 listed above can direct you to the books they use.

As with any business venture you should consult your management team [lawyer, accountant and insurance agent] for their advice on the actual nuts and bolts of things. We are only sparking discussion.

Locked out

Recently we were at a trade show promoting our books. It was early Saturday morning while everyone was opening up for the day. Brett from the Farmer’s Daughter LLC – http://www.preparesurvivethrive.us/farmers-daughter/ – had gone looking for change I believe is what he said, when he came to this one vender who had forgotten the keys to their money box. Well Brett being Brett he started going around to all the other venders to see if anyone had a key that would fit. No, we didn’t have a key that would fit.

The options discussed were that they could drive home and get the keys.. a 3 hour round trip which would been less fun than Gilligan’s Island. Destroy the box. Drive into town and hit an ATM $300 daily limit -20 miles- or just pack up and go home. None of those options were appealing to any of us.

It took about 10 minutes to get the moneybox open for them AND that included making the tools to do the job. So there was a happy ending. Oh, did I mention that we did have a locksmith at our table ;].

***Here is the take away from this. ***

They had BOTH keys to the lock box on the same keyring which is how it came from the store and had left them on the desk at home. This is normal, common behavior BTW. If you are married each of you should have a key on your key ring. If you are by yourself then you should have the backup set of keys somewhere safe that you can get to on your expedition. I carry 2 sets of car keys on me and my wife does too. Spare keys are cheaper and easier than being locked out.

When going on a trip especially out of town, fill out a load list – an example of this is in http://www.preparesurvivethrive.us/ready-or-not-fun-things-will-happen/ or you can write out a list and check it twice when you travel.

Skills – some skills are easy and quick to learn, others take a long time to learn, develop and maintain with constant practice. Examples of the more difficult skills include locksmithing and healthcare. This story was a good example of the locksmith being able to build the needed tools on need.

Our Store

We are opening up ‘Our Store’ on www.preparesurvivethrive.us and the items will be listed under the “Categories” on the right hand side of our site toward the bottom. Subscribers will of course receive a notice as with any other posting of a new listing BUT after that people will have to actively search for the store items. We are doing it this way so as to NOT have it so much in your face merchandizing like some sites we have all seen.

As with other affiliate programs we get a small commission off of the transaction yet at the same time it will NOT cost you any more than if you had gone directly to the Amazon [or whatever] site. We believe that this creates a win – win situation for all of us.
As with everything else about our site we look forward to reading your feedback on stuff.

If you would like to order an autographed copy of any of the books that members of our group have authored feel free to contact us via the ‘contact us’ form on the main page OR e-mailing office@preparesurvivethrive.com and arrangements can be made to get it to you.

They got bored, that’s all. If you keep them busy, you will keep them well behaved. Even children that are typically less than cooperative will be little angels if you can engage their interest. There are step by step instructions plus layouts with measurements to help you. Includes diagrams for layouts and step by step full color pictures. This is the only craft book you will need for the whole summer and beyond.
