Halloween NOW

Halloween NOW

Halloween is HERE!

Drive slow tonight, keep your eyes open, IF you are in costume take your mask OFF while you drive, WATCH OUT for the kids….

Parents – go with your kids, everyone needs a light of some kind on them so drivers can see them, kids watch both ways for traffic. Kids do NOT eat any of the candy until your parents have checked it over – it is not safe like it used to be when I was a kid or even when my kids were little.

This is a good time to stock up on some things. Typically whatever does not sell at full price will be put on clearance to clean out that section of the store for something else.

GO later tonight or first thing in the morning to get candy on clearance!

Small packages of candy would go great in your 72 hour kits and in your food storage program. The candy besides providing calories would be a welcome boost for everyone’s moral during an emergency. The hard candies store well in your car too.

The snap lights that you bend and shake to activate are wonderful for safety any time of the year. We carry some in out bug out bags and in the car too.

The costume makeup would come in handy for school plays and such.

Much of the stuff goes on clearance for 50% to 75% off late that night or early the next day. This would also go for Thanksgiving and Christmas too. Good time to get cheap decorations for next year.

Easter is over

Easter is over.

By the time you read this, Easter will be over for this year. NOW is the time to go to the store and stock up on Easter CANDY as it will be on clearance, normally half price or cheaper. Especially the jelly-beans and other such candy that will be relatively shelf stable and most not affected by heat- in this case room temperature so that when you open the container that you are storing it in that it has not melted into a solid mass.

If you store this candy in airtight containers in a reasonably cool area it will be just as good for next year as it is now. Come next year you will have cheaper candy for the season and can repeat the process year after year. The price of the candy and most likely everything else is only going to climb. So you will be SAVING money in this process too. Let us say that next year about this time a family member has lost their job, well the candy is already on hand for the kids and you don’t have to expend anything extra. And here is the biggest plus to this action, if something bad happens and you need to get into the candy sooner it is once again already on hand.

OK that is the why of it, now for the nuts and bolts of HOW to store the candy for medium to long term storage. The 2 main choices of storing dry food rigid or soft sided. The rigid containers come in 2 flavors which are glass or metal. The soft sided are basically plastic or Mylar. I like the metal cans the best in general as they are stackable and mice can not chew into them. Of the 2 main metal cans, I like new paint cans as they can be opened and resealed without damaging the cans.

What I do is take a 1 gallon slide or zip lockable plastic bag and put it inside the 1 gallon paint can. Then I put the bags of candy still the original packages into the bag in the can. As I get ready to close the big bag [and then the can itself] I put an oxygen package inside, you can also use those chemical hot hands packages in too.  They are the same thing except for the size. Either way they absorb both the oxygen and the moisture which in turn extends the storage life of the product.

Even if you do not add the packets the candy should be good for MANY years as is. As an example look at the fallout shelter candy that is still good after 50 years in storage.

All Hallow’s Eve

It is nearly All Hallow’s Eve, more commonly known as Halloween. How ever you observe it, it is fun, profitable [candy loot] and dangerous too. Face paint is safer than masks, stay with your kids as it is safer and more fun. Everyone should be carrying  some sort of light to not only see but to BE seen. Know who you are visiting. One major rule that we always had, both for us and our kids [and now grandkids] NO eating the treats until they have been inspected.

Another aspect of Halloween is the treats. Of course you want to have plenty of candy on hand for the kids. Depending on your area the stores sometimes put the candy on sale or clearance late in the day on the 31st, at least by the next morning. This is a great time to stock up for the rest of the year and in your BOB or bug out bag. I go for the peanut-butter taffy which individually wrapped so it is easy to eat one the go while you are walking.

For storage it will last a long time repackaged into quart or sandwich zip lock bags or in Mylar. Basically anything that keeps the air out. We have put it up in the sandwich bags for portion control and then sealed them in #10 cans for long-term storage. The #10 cans stack well and can even be used as furniture [more on that later].

If you are thinking ‘Why candy” ?? if you have kids, they will be easier to live with if they can have treats during the year. It does not matter what age the kids are 5-8 or 58 ;] everyone likes to have treats of some kind. Also it makes a good barter item.
