Halloween prep

Halloween – can you believe that it will be here next week?! It is not like when we were kids. We used to go around the several blocks near our street with out much if any concern.

As we grew up and then had our own kids it was not as safe as when we were kids. The local hospitals would x-ray the sacks of loot aka candy for free because of some of the things people would put in it to hurt the kids. One incident sticks in my mind of those days. A friend went with her kids and then they only hit houses with friends or family….. A razor blade was found in the candy that the kids got that night.. The mom was certain of the house that it had come from. The police went to the house and found more tampered candy. To say that it did not go well with that person while she was in jail would be an under statement. 1. child molesters / abusers are considered the lowest of the low to the other prisoners. 2. the mom who’s kids had found the blades was one of the jailers.

The short of that part of the story is that the perp got 5 years ‘at hard labor’ [and was beaten a few times when word got around the cell block about what had happened.]

Today we inspect the candy prior to any of the grand kids getting any of it. We have our own trunk or treat at church which the kids seem to like as well or better than they do out and about. We have games and the kids go around to the several classrooms for candy and stuff. This may be something to do. Several families could go in together to have a backyard party.

Some other safety issues to consider. Discourage masks that can obstruct vision. Make sure the costumes are well fitting so the kids don’t trip. Over the years we have tried different types of lights / markers. The chemical light sticks that you bend and then shake to mix the chemicals together are nice and nontoxic. We have found that the orange does not show up as good as green. blue or yellow. The flashlights that both shine to illuminate the path AND have a colored blinking light of red, blue or green works very well. The ones that I like the best uses 2 double A batteries and has a feature the turns the blinker on automatically when it gets wet. Wal-Mart has them for under $8.00. With the different colors on the light you can tell at a distance who you are looking at. We also use them in our BOBs. The chemical lights also go great in your BOBs.

It would be a good idea to have a route planned [and written down] of what streets you will go on and about what time you plan on being back home. Consider going early in the evening so there is some light. Remember to LOOK both ways before being in the street. Travel in groups AND STAY TOGETHER.

If you stay home and do not want goblins and such visiting you, close your gates and put a sign on it like [do NOT disturb] at a hotel. On the other hand if you want the munchkins to visit you have the gate open, yard well lit and sign saying something like Goblins welcome. In some areas it may be safer to have several people at home to hand out treats. Think of it this way….. Halloween is a time when people are out and about in disguises and people expect to hear screams and such which will tend to cover up a home invasion, robbery, kidnapping or murder. YES, I have been called a wet blanket before.

This time of year is a great time to stock up on some candy to keep in your food storage and to put into your BOB. Some stores will put it on sale late Halloween night or early the next day, sometimes for 50% off. Decorations, costumes and other related stuff goes on clearance too. Most of the candy is already in an airtight package which will aide in long term storage. The candy can be put up in either tin cans or Mylar and if kept cool it will store for many years. Zip tight bags will hold the candy in the freezer too for years. Some people put a few pieces of candy in the daily food packages to round out the meal.

This gives you more variety than just tootsie rolls and such that you get all year long.

Home Invasion

Blog home invasion

Violent crime seems to be on the rise. Last post we discussed V getting sprayed with pepper. In that case it appeared to be a stupid prank. It just as easily been the start of a home invasion.

Some home invasions are straight forward in that the perps know someone is home and the perps attack one of the doors breaking it open with brute force. The intention is to overwhelm the occupants before they can mount any soft of resistance. The perps have often dressed in black BDUs similar to how police SWAT teams dress. The manner of dress is intended to confuse the occupants even further. If the occupants are innocent they may believe that the intruders are real police and not resist and have gruesome results. On the other hand, the real police may be at the wrong address / raiding the wrong house, if the occupants resist they be shot by the police, if they resist and succeed in driving the intruders away [which is doubtful] then the government [police] calls in more fire power and they WILL get the occupants and at least charge them with resisting arrest & then take them to jail. Either way you are damned if you do or damned if you are passive. Basically you [your family] will have to war game it and decide how you plan to respond.

Another scenario is where the perps will send someone who looks innocent such as a young boy in V’s case or a female to knock at the door to get the occupants to open the door and then the rest of the ‘gang’ storms the door to get in. in some respects this scene is easier to deal with than what was presented above. The perps may well catch you off guard but at least there will be no doubt in your mind when the crap starts that they are criminals instead of maybe being the police.

OK, so what do you do to protect yourself and your family?

Install heavy duty chain devices on the doors with long screws into the frame of the door. If you have a solid door without near by windows you can have a peep hole installed so you can see who is at the door. Have motion activated lights at the doors and around the house if possible to both light the area and alert you to possible bad guys hiding. There are solar / battery powered lights to prevent the bad guys from cutting the house power and totally blacking you out. Make sure that the bushes are well trimmed around the house so that people can not hide behind them. A fence around your house and yard prevents people from saying that they are lost or that they are chasing their dog and other such lame excuses.

Security cameras are a good idea so that you can see all around the house and maybe even record it all so that the perps can be prosecuted. Some times even fake cameras will deter some crime.

Some people that I know keep a baseball bat [with ball and glove] near the doors so that they are always ready to play ball. ;] Others have been known to keep a sward handy for self defense. Of course you should check your local laws on all this. Some places have laws against fortifying your home to impede the police, but it is OK to do so to protect against criminals.

Think – SAFETY!

Think SAFETY!

Nothing replaces taking a live first aid class.

Regardless of the specific issues of each case there are some general commonalities that have to be considered. We have all heard of the Hippocratic Oath that doctors take to “FIRST, do no harm”. Basically don’t make matters worse for the people involved. Along with this prime directive goes the concern for responders to be mindful of their OWN safety. If you get hurt too, you will not be much good to the casualty PLUS you will increase the work load for the people who respond as your back up. The next responders will have to divide their attention between the first victim and you, the newest victim. So your first concern is, ‘is the scene SAFE for me to be here”. If it is not safe for you, you should call for help and prevent others from becoming casualties.

For clarity we will be discussing things in a linier fashion, just keep in mind that many of the steps will actually be happening at the same time and be overlapping. It does take time and practice for you to do these things smoothly.

If the casualty is talking there are a few things that we know right away. Their AIRWAY is clear and they are BREATHING and that they have CIRCULATION – the heart is beating. Circulation has a second part – are the pipes leaking? Are they bleeding anywhere? Bleeding sometimes is more important to deal with than ABC, so in other words instead of the A B Cs it is

C A B Cs.
