HEAT WAVE 2021

HEAT WAVE 2021

This year has been a bit HOT. Yesterday it was 96 degrees F which broke the record for the last almost 60 years. Other areas record were  up to 107F

This week there is a rodeo in town and listening to the scanner for medical calls the incidence of heat related injuries is high as well.

The sad thing about heat injuries is that by and large they ARE preventable!!!

It is always better to prevent de-hydration by drinking water. How much should you drink a day? It is NOT the oft repeated 8, 8 ounce glasses.  For the basic amount take your weight in pounds and divide by 2 = the number of ounces you should drink a day. This amount assumes that you are sitting at a desk. The best way to know that you are drinking enough is to check your urine. Normal healthy urine is clear to straw color with no odor. In babies we like to see 8-12 wet diapers a day. Most adults should do the same ahhh EXCEPT hopefully without diapers.

A young Marine that I know very well recently told me that 2 GALLONS of water a day was just NOT enough!

Side note, at some airports when the temperature gets above 120F, they ground the airplanes because the air is not thick enough for safe flight.
