USMC bad day in History

Back in the 60 & 70s Beirut was one of the best places to vacation.  SMH  Sadly, this is no longer the case.

Lest we forget – 40 years ago today in history.

On October 23, 1983 at 6:22 a.m., a large delivery truck drove to the Beirut International Airport where the Marine Barracks was located. After turning onto an access road leading to the compound, the driver rushed through a barbed-wire fence, passed between two sentry posts, crashed through the gate, and slammed into the lobby of the barracks. The driver detonated explosives with the power equal to more than 12,000 pounds of TNT. The explosion crumbled the four-story building, crushing service members to death while they were sleeping. The terrorist attack killed 220 Marines and 21 other U.S. service members who were stationed there to help keep the peace in a nation torn by war. It was the bloodiest day in the Corps’ history since World War II, when Marines fought to secure Iwo Jima. Video by Sgt. Michael Acosta, Cpl. Bryce Burton, Robert Butler, Staff Sgt. We would be better off IF we ALL paid attention to world events, along with regional and LOCAL. Pay attention to those around you! What is going on? Is anyone acting oddly? Are there any out of place packages?

It comes down to Situational Awareness.

Have a plan!

Discuss with your family/friends where you will meet up when you are out and about. [Evac plan] How will you stay in touch with each other? [COMM plan– Primary, Alternate, Contingency Emergency – PACE for short.] Of course your cell phone will be primary, My family have radios on us while we are out, we have HAM licenses.   EDC plan  I always have a water bottle with me for example. Basically, IF you have been following us for any length of time…   This is nothing different than we have said for YEARS.

Friday October 13th

Friday October 13th

Here is the projection by most others. [Tomorrow is declared to be a global Muslim Jihad uprising day in response to Israel’s invasion of Gaza, and its mass indiscriminate bombing of Palestinian civilians across the Gaza Strip.

Expect Jewish places of worship to be targeted, and take all precautions for safety and security.]

What is the reality?

Who knows?

I don’t. Also most others don’t either, I bet.

What we DO know is that those that did the attack recently in Israel are monsters. They are evil.

Do they actually have anything planned for the next month or so? Once again, who knows?  However regardless of their plans, IF they can alter OUR behavior, they win.

So here are MY plans. We will do what we always do. Every Thursday we top up our vehicle’s fuel tank. We hit the food section and get whatever fresh foods we want for the next several days. We do whatever other errands we need done. Sunday is church. There is no reason to not go.

General plans – everyone DOES need to be alert to their surroundings ALL the time. Be aware where the exits are and the best route back to your vehicle/home. Stay in communication with the rest of your family.

Carry water, cut wood, same as we do every week.

OK, so why is Friday the 13th is unlucky? Well first off it is NOT every Friday the 13th.  Friday the 13th of October 1307 is when the POPE ordered that the Knights Templar be arrested. Many of them were arrested, tortured and a lot of them were burned at the stake. Others died in prison. Rumor has it that many more escaped capture and fled to the new world [America] once again, who know???

botg report

We have 2 Walmart stores in town AND a distribution center at the edge of town.

5 Doz eggs $18.17 – back in May 2022 they were $7.00 for the same size [but at least we have them. Sam’s Club has them for $20.50.

Lard 8lbs buckets were $8.00 back in May 2022 they went UP to $16.81…this week end they were on CLEARANCE for $8.81  WHY in the world would they be clearing it out?

They are NOT near best by date yet. Well into 2023.

Sugar isle was EMPTY!

We went by the deli section before noon- half the steam table trays were EMPTY…  The staff member said they were OUT… not cooking more, but TOTALLY OUT of the items.

Deaths are UP in our area as are general crimes…  USED to be when dispatcher ends the call with 1 or 2 other officers to provide cover/back up to the primary officer sent on violent cases….  The last 9-12 months the dispatcher ends with “will get you cover when we can” so the police are super busy and short handed—BOTH city and county.  SO far we have not lost any, just a matter of time until one of them gets hurt badly.

A friend just got a new C_pap device after 9 MONTHS since her last one broke. Her health really declined during that time without it.

Wal-mart HAS full shelves of ammo at about double price from last year. They have so much shotgun ammo that it is back out on the shelves in sporting goods. For the last several months they have been OUT and when they did get some in they were gone by the end of the day. They are still limiting 3 boxes per person per day.

Up date from 2 days ago///

at Walmart The lard was restocked and is still on CLEARANCE for $8.81/8lbs.   Which is a good thing… it is EASY to can lard for long term storage. IF you can find jars ect…  our Walmart does have an OK [but not great] stock of canning supplies including pressure cookers.

Sugar isle was STILL EMPTY!

We went by the deli section before noon again…. OVER half the steam table trays were CLEAN and EMPTY   still  TOTALLY OUT of the items.

cross ref  http://www.preparesurvivethrive.us/baby-formula/    BTW the same areas of baby formula have been empty for over 6 months now….  IF the shortage was from a contaminated production plant like they said it was this spring they would have had it cleaned up in the first few weeks and been back to making stuff LONG ago! There is way more to this than we are being told. What are your thoughts???

Count down to Jan 20th

Count down to Jan 20th 2021

Here we are a week before Biden/Harris get sworn in.

Half are happy and half are not…..   Things are what they are. Do the best you can.

Regardless of how you feel about all this, maintain your social distance from all the activities.

There is more going on than meets the eye with all this stuff last week.

Stay peaceful and orderly, remember that we are still a nation of laws .

OK so what to do during this time of change?

Gather information locally. Listen to your radios [am/fm broadcast, scanner, CB, ect to know what is going on. Stay away from any trouble spots. Share information with your friends and us here at the blog [in the comments section of this post] report any criminal activity you witness to the police.

Top off you fuel tank Thursday of this week AND again on MONDAY next week. Make your last runs to the stores to top up your provisions as if you were heading into a 3 week blizzard.

Review your communication plans with your family / team.

What do you still need to deal with a shelter in place situation?

Just a side note…   the national guard in all 50 states reportedly are on alert and for sure the ones in DC will be armed [and just as scared about the situation as anyone else is]. DO NOT push them,, they are just trying to do their jobs. Same with the police, FBI ect…

Be ready to provide first aid and other emergency care IF there is trouble…

With less than a week to go…..   the House wants to impeach NOW….   Consider that once the new people are in office at noon on the 20th – congress will no longer have jurisdiction to deal with The Donald….   So what is the real point?  It is a waste of time and effort…

It is now 2 weeks till the election.

What things do YOU need to get finished so that you can limit your trips away from home and hearth the week or so during and after the election? Have you voted yet? Most of our team has. We went in during the early phase.  At the time I am typing this according to the local news about 40% of this state’s population has already voted – one way or the other.

There is still time to get things via Amazon or one of the big box stores. Consider this to be last minute preps OR early shopping for Christmas presents/sticking stuffers.

Top up on the shelf stable food for the winter/spring until your garden starts producing. Order the seeds you need for spring planting now….

Do you have enough water stored ahead AND a plan to get more IF/when the water stops flowing from the pipes? Consider getting a few more SAWYER water filters while you can. A few gallons of plain unscented bleach is a great thing to stock for both water treatment and cleaning.

Do you have enough TP Or another way to clean up after using the toilet? Bidet anyone?

How are you going to stay warm or cook your food if the power going out?

Do you know those who live near you and which ones you can trust?

How are you going to stay in touch with family if the phones go out?

Have you written down your communication and evacuation plans? We do like the Baofeng UV 5R radios for monitoring public service / weather radio systems.

Are you journaling these times to help you and your grand-kids learn from the times?

Top off your fuel tanks in your vehicles each Thursday and get some cash out of the bank to have on hand.

NEWS flash Portland

NEWS flash I was just alerted to this..

Portland. OR some reports describe it as rioting involving ANTIFA against other groups. IDK, I am not there, BUT it would be best if YOU stay alert and aware of your surroundings. http://www.preparesurvivethrive.us/general-preps/

The Police Bureau attempts to work with all event organizers to establish an environment where community members may safely practice their First Amendment Rights of speech and assembly. The Police Bureau encourages:
Event organizers to communicate with liaison officers so the Police Bureau is aware of the needs and intentions of the groups represented by the respective organizers;

* People who observe suspicious items or activity or are aware of incidents that place a person’s life, safety or property in danger should contact police in person or by calling 9-1-1 if you can; text 9-1-1 if you can’t.
* People near others who are preparing to or in the act of committing criminal behavior are encouraged to separate themselves from the group and notify police; and
* Listen to and adhere to directions provided by the Police Bureau’s public address vehicle. The announcements provide important information about officers’ observations, what actions demonstrators and counter-demonstrators must take and what action the Police Bureau may take.

What are YOUR thoughts on all this?

May the odds ever be in your favor – RBO

SAR markings

Search and rescue
Markings.

The first line for the X is made BEFORE you enter the structure, at this time you would also place YOUR rescue team or group ID. CPD 3/

You will want to make this big enough to be seen from a distance such as from the street and do not put it on the door as the door can be removed to be used as a stretcher or something.

After your team comes out of the structure you will make the second line of the X \ and write the date and time in 24 hour clock on TOP of the X

You will end up with makings which will look something like this;
2018-Oct-15 0700

CPD3 X GL
0 DB

At the bottom would the number of living or dead bodies inside. Example DB dead bodies, LB for live bodies or survivors.

** in the NOTES section you can add any resources found IF that is of interest to your group for later. F for food and W for safe water example they have a row or however many shelves with cases of bottled water OR 2L coke bottles of water.

Your local group may decide on specific verbiage that will be used but this is the generally accepted format when you see it used on the news or real life.

What to use to make the marks? Some groups use spray paint which lasts a LONG time, others use “permeant’ markers which will fade after several months or Crayons. I have even heard of some specifying the colors to be used, I do not find this to be practical for the most part as you may not have the colors available.

IF you are the ones making the search of buildings because nobody else is available you must be extremely careful [and it would be best for someone -the more the better- in your family / group should attend a CERT class in your area- contact your fire department and they can give you more information about local happenings] a search team generally consist of 4 to 6 people. 1 to 3 people STAY outside to provide back up and over watch in case things go wrong. The 1st person in stays just inside the door to keep an eye on the others who enter, during this process everyone will be looking at all 6 sides of the room -news [north, east, west and south] along with the floor and ceiling. The 2nd & 3rd person to enter calls out in a loud voice to anyone who may be in the building if there is any response the survivors should be told to “come here to the front door”. If this happens the survivors should be questioned about the safety and generally about the building and then told to either wait here or go outside to the others. Using any information obtained to direct your search OR if nobody answered after several shouts then you will start a systematic search of the building. Start either to the right or the left whatever your group has agreed on and go room to room on that floor. Mark each room as you enter and exit it similar to the outside markings. Pause often listen, call out to survivors and listen again. If you hear anything try to triangulate the sound between you, shining light at the sound. Once you have cleared all the rooms on the 1st floor go to the next floor up and follow the same procedure, ect for each floor and then basement assuming that there are more than the ground floor. During this you of course will maintain contact via radio reporting to all of you search team. Usually CERT teams operate on ch1 of FRS/GMRS radios.

Keep good records of all this to report to emergency services personnel or your coordinator for follow up when the professionals arrive. Do the best you can for the victims.

###

There is a secondary system that uses a triangle that YOU can use to communicate with members of your family group. This is part of an established communications and evacuation plan in your family group.
There are 5 or 6 basic factors to show in this.
In the outside area on the upper left you put the number of days after the event that you arrived.
In the outside area on the upper right you put the number of days you stayed at this spot.
Under the triangle you would put the number of people you arrived with and separated by a slash / you would list the number of people you left with.
In the center of the triangle you would put the number from your evac plan of your destination.
In this example EB9 is the call sign of the person who left the sign.
IF you put an M on it there is a message for you, if there is not an M then they did not leave one.

So it would look something like this with a triangle around the 6

0 2
6 EB9 M
5 / 4

You arrived with 5 people at this rendezvous or rally point ON the day of the event and you stayed 2 days and left with 4 people. M = you left a written message- in this case your family group has agreed that written messages are put on the right side of the structure or the big tree, whatever your group decides. You can use whatever container you would like to weather proof the message such as a jar, zip loc bag or lay’s chip container- whatever is available or write it in crayon on the structure.

You will want to make this big enough to be seen from a distance such as from the street, but do not make it massive.

Some groups may designate a specific color [s] to mean something or person, I do not find this to be as useful as you may not have that color available to you at the time.

EAS false alarm

EAS false alarm

Recently there was a false warning for a missile attack on Hawaii. The warning lasted about 37-38 minutes and caused a great deal of panic. People were going into the storm drains for shelter.

Apparently someone had just hit the wrong button. All I got to say about that is IT happens. That raises a question in my mind. Ideally everything should go as planned 100% of the time. That is not reality though now is it? Which would you rather have happen, a false alarm OR no alarm and the first you know is a bright flash of a nuke going off? IF we can not have 100%, then I would rather get a few false alarms than miss out.. SO, in my mind it was a good thing as it showed flaws in the system, it made people think and has sparked conversation!

So let’s analyze the situation– here in the US of A mainland we are about 30 minutes by ICBM from Russia and China and North Korea– comforting thought. In Hawaii it is way less than that maybe 10 or 15 minutes from North Korea. Maybe if people could keep that in mind they would not be panicky after the first 20 minutes [ymmv]

Shelter – it would be great if you had a designated shelter to go to, 2nd best is retrofitting your basement . As far as going into the storm drains or sewer systems, it is a good idea until it rains and washes the fallout into the drains. The other issues with going underground like that is methane which displaces oxygen which WILL kill you. Think about it, the next time you see a work crew going in the pipes they always keep one person on the surface AND they pump fresh air down to the underground workers.

Is it possible to survive a nuclear weapon attack?? Unless you are directly at ground zero, yes it is. I was stationed in Japan in the 1970s. Part of my duties as a medic was taking care of some of the survivors from the 2 atom bombs we dropped in the 40s. This was not from the kindness of our [or our government] hearts. We wanted the data for research. It was very interesting seeing the flash burns on them [the survivors] and you could tell what the patterns of clothing they had on. The darker part of the pattern had worse burns V the lighter colored areas. One of the people was SOOOoooo… lucky, he was 700 – 1,000 yards from ground zero with the first bomb and survived, then he walked home where he was just in time to be caught in the 2nd bombing… mind you this was back in the 1940s. He finally dies of old age in the early 2000s about 60 years after being bombed twice.

Which brings us to— what are you doing to get prepared?

long term storage tip sealing

Long term storage tip

How to seal stuff air tight for long term storage. One of the better long term storage containers IF it is going to be kept in a dark space is plastic or Mylar. This will keep both air and liquids either in or out depending on what you want. The hard part is sealing the container. If you are using plastic bags or Mylar bags they will store for a very long time. If you are freezing something make sure that you leave a little bit of empty space for expansion BUT get as much air out as you can before sealing the bag.

How to seal the bag? You can spend and get a dedicated device such as a seal a meal or vacuum sealer which can be expensive when new which unless you are doing a lot of it can be cost prohibitive.

You can build a dedicated device out of wood and a clothing iron. This is more economical but can take up a lot of space. In essence you take 2 2x4s however long so that you have a bit of extra length to play with.

What you will need- 2 pieces of 2 x 4 about 2 feet long, 4-5 inch C clamp, a door hinge and screws, a drill, saw and a screw driver. How you build it – cut to length, match them up so that when constructed you will sandwich the Mylar or plastic bag between the 2 x 4s, place the door hinge so that the 2 pieces of wood will articulate like a door opens and closes, mark the spots for the screws and drill pilot holes. Place the screws.

HOW to use – fill the bag leaving enough empty so that the jaws of 2 x 4s can close AND leave about an inch of the bag sticking out, fold this over to the side with the sheet of aluminum foil over it which protects the iron when you seal the bag. Set the iron to medium heat and slowly run it along the flap. Test the seal to make sure it worked. You may have to move faster or slower or adjust the temp up or down depending on the quality of the seals.

Depending on what you are storing you can now toss the package in the freezer, on the shelf or take it out and bury it.

If you are only going to do a few packages you can use a hair curling iron and use it as above.

Lights after Christmas

I wanted to get this quick TIMELY tip out to you today.

It’s a tip that I’ve suggested for the last several years on the day after Christmas that a lot of you have taken advantage of… If you’ve got the time, head to your local Home Depot, Lowes, Ace, Target, etc. and buy some LED Christmas lights on closeout.

Home Depot even has sets this year that are solar powered and come with a solar charger, Lithium Ion battery, a light sensor to turn them on automatically at dusk and a timer to turn them off 6 hours later! If you’ve got 120 volt emergency power, these are a great cheap way to keep your house lit during an emergency.

A great accompaniment is the SMALL 1 plug cigarette adapter inverters that you can buy from Wal-Mart and other stores so that you can power the lights with a 12 volt battery. And, if you want more adaptability, you can spend another $3 and get a battery harness that will hold 8 AA batteries (1.5vx8=12v) so you can run your LED strings on AA batteries.

The model I like is from Radio Shack, has a 9v type connector, and works like a charm. As you’re searching, you might want to look for these features: -strings of lights rather than “icicle” lights -a female plug at the end so you can run multiple sets in series -wired so that the set will still work if a bulb goes out -LED -can be saved for next year or used as emergency lighting OR as night security lighting :]

Now is a great time to get wrapping paper on clearance, last year my daughter stocked up for $0.25 on the dollar which made this year’s WAY cheaper. ;]

If you’ve got any other after-Christmas prepper deals that you’re finding, please share them with us.
