Thanksgiving 2020

from a friend….

This year marks the 400th Anniversary of the Mayflower’s landing at Plymouth.  We believe our first President, George Washington may have said it best with his October 3, 1789 Proclamation:

Thanksgiving Proclamation

[New York, 3 October 1789]

By the President of the United States of America. a Proclamation.

Whereas it is the duty of all Nations to acknowledge the providence of Almighty God, to obey his will, to be grateful for his benefits, and humbly to implore his protection and favor—and whereas both Houses of Congress have by their joint Committee requested me “to recommend to the People of the United States a day of public thanksgiving and prayer to be observed by acknowledging with grateful hearts the many signal favors of Almighty God especially by affording them an opportunity peaceably to establish a form of government for their safety and happiness.”

Now therefore I do recommend and assign Thursday the 26th day of November next to be devoted by the People of these States to the service of that great and glorious Being, who is the beneficent Author of all the good that was, that is, or that will be—That we may then all unite in rendering unto him our sincere and humble thanks—for his kind care and protection of the People of this Country previous to their becoming a Nation—for the signal and manifold mercies, and the favorable interpositions of his Providence which we experienced in the course and conclusion of the late war—for the great degree of tranquillity, union, and plenty, which we have since enjoyed—for the peaceable and rational manner, in which we have been enabled to establish constitutions of government for our safety and happiness, and particularly the national One now lately instituted—for the civil and religious liberty with which we are blessed; and the means we have of acquiring and diffusing useful knowledge; and in general for all the great and various favors which he hath been pleased to confer upon us.

And also that we may then unite in most humbly offering our prayers and supplications to the great Lord and Ruler of Nations and beseech him to pardon our national and other transgressions—to enable us all, whether in public or private stations, to perform our several and relative duties properly and punctually—to render our national government a blessing to all the people, by constantly being a Government of wise, just, and constitutional laws, discreetly and faithfully executed and obeyed—to protect and guide all Sovereigns and Nations (especially such as have shewn kindness unto us) and to bless them with good government, peace, and concord—To promote the knowledge and practice of true religion and virtue, and the encrease of science among them and us—and generally to grant unto all Mankind such a degree of temporal prosperity as he alone knows to be best.

Given under my hand at the City of New-York the third day of October in the year of our Lord 1789.

slow roasted turkey 2020

one week counting down to Thanksgiving!!

slow roasted turkey

I have used this fashion of roasting turkeys for many years. It consistently produces fall off the bone moist turkey every time AND it is hard to over cook or burn it. ;]

Preplanning the feast. Start a few days ahead of when you plan to have your turkey / meal. How big is your turkey? For this discussion we will say that it weighs 20 pounds and is still in the deep freeze. Do you have a roasting pan that will comfortably hold the turkey? Assemble everything that you need for the meal. Write down everything that you are missing and go buy it.

A day or 2 before the meal bake whatever pies you want. The day before make the bread, I would suggest Ezekiel bread. 21 hours before you plan on sitting down for the meal take the turkey out of the freezer. Dice 2 or 3 large onions and make a bed in the roaster pan for the turkey. Release the turkey from the wrapping while it is still frozen and put it on the bed of onions. Coat the turkey with olive oil apply seasonings which will follow. Add 1 cup of water to the pan. Cover & place into the oven. Set your oven to 200 degrees F [no preheating required] set an alarm for 20 hours from starting the oven. Here is the hard part…. Leave it alone, no peaking!

By taking the bird straight from the freezer and cooking it this way germs do not have time to multiply as the turkey spends very little time in the danger zone of 40 – 140 degrees F.

At the end of the 20 hours [1 hour per pound at 200 degrees F] remove the cover and turn the heat up to 350 degrees to brown your turkey. Carve and serve.

INGREDIENTS FOR THE RUB
• 1 tablespoon dried thyme leaves
• 1 tablespoon dried basil leaves
• 1 1/2 teaspoons crushed dried rosemary leaves
• 1 teaspoon dried marjoram leaves
• 1 teaspoon rubbed sage (crumbled between your fingers)
• 2 teaspoons coarse salt
• 1/2 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
+++
One year the stores had whole turkeys 20 pounds for $5.00— that year we put up [canned] 150 pounds of turkey [after skinning and deboning] .
What are your recipes for Thanksgiving and Christmas meals?

Election report 2020

Election report 2020

Well, as I type this on Veteran’s Day, the election has NOT been declared one way nor the other. NONE of the states have CERTIFIED the votes. YET.  The media can call it anyway that they want BUT that is NOT the legal determination. The media does not have the legal power to decide.

Remember back in 2000 Bush V Gore? Recounts, hanging chads, court involvement and all that stuff. It does not matter which side of the issue anyone is on for this discussion. Half of the population will be happy and the rest not so much. There is going to be recounts and court challenges for the next month ish…. THEN on December 14th [this time- there is a formula to figure it out during other elections] the electoral college votes and they will pick who will be presented to Congress to vote for on January 6th. This happens EVERY time there is a presidential election, NOT just this time.

THE most important issue to be protected is the perception by the American public that the process can be trusted. Right now many don’t trust the system. Time will tell as to the results of the election and what happens over the next year or so.

Interesting how many places have had riots most nights for the last several months [Portland OR for example] and this last week strangely silent. Kinda like the calm before a big storm. Regardless of how the process outlined above shakes out it would be best to be ready to shelter in place and have what you will need to limit the times you have to go out in public.

The jury is still out ref the Human Malware Program-19 .  Regardless of what the reality is, during the winter or cold months, there are things we should ALL be doing. WASH your hands often, cover your coughs, PROPER use of PPE [personal protective equipment]  AND if you are sick STAY home and away from others. Talk with YOUR healthcare provider about your specific concerns.

Stores are starting to limit how much of each product you can buy AGAIN due to current shortages. HUMMMm    guess we ALL should have been stocking up  RIGHT?

Paper towels, TP for example. So far I have not heard of limits on food YET.  BUT there are shortages of SOME foods already or is it still?  I would make sure that you have shelf stable foods to last for a LONG blizzard, read back over what we have discussed the last several years. Talk with you healthcare provider about what medications you need to have on hand. There are entries which suggest areas for discussion with your healthcare provider. One thing is for sure… prices on everything are going up.

What are your thoughts and concerns during the current times??  Post them in the comments section below.

Veteran’s Day 2020

Yesterday was the birthday of the USMC – 1775-11-10

We intentionally are combining that with Veteran’s Day this year.

This date in history… the 11th hour on the 11th day of the 11th month of 1918 was the last day of World War One…… This was actually before we had to start numbering them. Back then it was simply the Great [meaning BIG] War aka the War to end wars… How sadly wrong they ended up being…

Commemorated in many countries as Armistice Day the following year, November 11th became a federal holiday in the United States in 1938. In the aftermath of World War II and the Korean War, Armistice Day became known as Veterans Day.

On this day and every day please remember and pray for OUR troops deployed or at home. Past, present and future! Keep in mind that their family supported their service.

PLEASE, be the kind of Americans who are worthy of the sacrifices….

To our brothers and sisters in arms….   Remember your oath….

USMC Birthday 2020

Happy Birthday Marines!

See you on Veteran’s Day 2020!

Semper Fi!

Revolutionary Result

The US Marine Corps started as the Continental Marines on November 10, 1775. On that date, the Second Continental Congress decided that they needed 2 battalions of Marines to serve as landing forces with the Continental Navy during the American Revolutionary War (1775–1783).

After the war, the Continental Navy was dismantled, and as a consequence the Marines as well. However, after increasing conflict with revolutionary France, the Marine Corps was formally re-established.

US Marine Corps Today

The United States Marine Corps is the US Armed Forces’ combined-arms task force on land, at sea, and in the air. It has more than 180,000 active duty personnel as well as almost 40,000 personnel in the Marine Corps Reserve.

Tomorrow is Veteran’s day where we honor ALL of our Veterans.

Election EVE

Election EVE

OK folks things seem to be heating up. First Wal-Mart pulled ALL of the guns and ammo from their displays  last week “in case there were rioting going on” then Friday they put most of them back on display except in the worst areas.  Friday a friend in Madison WI reported that the stores downtown were boarding up their windows getting ready for the election riots.  Getting similar reports from other places around the country.  Many police departments have cancelled days off, vacations ect for one to two weeks surrounding the elections.  And then there is this head line–New York City luxury buildings hire armed guards for possible Election Day unrest. Them that can afford that would do well to have that in place all over.  In my area listening to the police calls  there are more and more calls stacked up WAITING for an officer to become available and often when they get dispatched the call is ended with the dispatcher saying “I will send back up as soon as I can”.  Folks that is very concerning to many of us as it shows how over loaded the system is getting.  It IS bad now and I believe that it will get much worse regardless of who ‘wins’ Tuesday. It will be bad at least till spring.

But what are the rest of us going to do?

Top up your vehicle this morning on the way to work OR tonight on the way to get stuff.

It is NOT too late to organize with those who live near you.  You can still go to the big box stores and buy stuff. Get last minute stuff as if it were going to blizzard for the next 1 – 6 months. While you are there get a couple of CB radios antennas, AND cigarette lighter plug in so you can power the CB in your vehicles.  Also get a few of those blister pack FRS/GMRS radios AND if they have them a mobile radio to go with them. IF they have scanner radios get one of those too. Do you have a good AM/FM radio or 2. Gathering information will be vital in the coming months. Charge and check ALL of your communications devices. Make sure they are all programmed correctly and that everyone knows how to use them. Finalize your communications plan. What if the net goes down? Do NOT depend on only your cell phones nor just one or 2 social media sites to communicate with friends / family.

Review your bug out plan and fine tune it. Where are you going? How are you getting there-transportation- AND routes?

Security issues- when things are going on in your area you will need at least one person on FIRE watch 24/7.  They can also monitor the radios.  Should things locally continue down hill you will have to set up stronger security arrangements  3 or more people to do this. One person to stay at the Comms center / command post and the other 2 to patrol or stand guard.  What does that look like for you?  Could need 12 people for this. Which leads to how do you / they get sleep, eat and take care of other bodily functions?  How does the rest of what you have to get done, get done? What is everyone’s work load?

Please let us know about things in your areas and ideas to address your concerns. Reply below.
