Eclipse 2024 is tomorrow STAY ALERT

Eclipse 2024  OK folks here is an early posting — The big event will be happening SOON.  You MAY still be able to get last minute stuff and top up with fuel. I recall the eclipse in Casper WY 2017 and all the foolishness that happened that day with that large number of people visiting the area[s]  We are a couple hundred miles away and we had thousands of extra people here and it was a mess! A couple of hour trip turned into 12-14 hours.

The FAA closed the airspace a bit before the eclipse and it reportedly stayed closed for awhile after and even then FAA only let a few planes leave and get clear maybe every 30 minutes or so. Anyway the following alert from the FAA seems tame – https://weatherboy.com/faa-issues-warning-for-air-travel…/

Be safe, STAY ALERT share your experiences with the rest of us.

slow roasted turkey 2022

slow roasted turkey

I have used this fashion of roasting turkeys for many years. It consistently produces fall off the bone moist turkey every time AND it is hard to over cook or burn it. ;]

Preplanning the feast. Start a few days ahead of when you plan to have your turkey / meal. How big is your turkey? For this discussion we will say that it weighs 20 pounds and is still in the deep freeze. Do you have a roasting pan that will comfortably hold the turkey? Assemble everything that you need for the meal. Write down everything that you are missing and go buy it.

A day or 2 before the meal bake whatever pies you want. The day before make the bread, I would suggest Ezekiel bread. 22 hours before you plan on sitting down for the meal take the turkey out of the freezer. Dice 2 or 3 large onions and make a bed in the roaster pan for the turkey. Release the turkey from the wrapping while it is still frozen and put it on the bed of onions. Coat the turkey with olive oil apply seasonings which will follow. Add 1 cup of water to the pan. Cover & place into the oven. Set your oven to 200 degrees F [no preheating required] set an alarm for 20 hours from starting the oven. Here is the hard part…. Leave it alone, no peaking!

By taking the bird straight from the freezer and cooking it this way germs do not have time to multiply as the turkey spends very little time in the danger zone of 40 – 140 degrees F.

At the end of the 20 hours [1 hour per pound at 200 degrees F] remove the cover and turn the heat up to 350 degrees to brown your turkey. Carve and serve.

INGREDIENTS FOR THE RUB
• 1 tablespoon dried thyme leaves
• 1 tablespoon dried basil leaves
• 1 1/2 teaspoons crushed dried rosemary leaves
• 1 teaspoon dried marjoram leaves
• 1 teaspoon rubbed sage (crumbled between your fingers)
• 2 teaspoons coarse salt
• 1/2 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
+++
One year the stores had whole turkeys 20 pounds for $5.00— that year we put up [canned] 150 pounds of turkey [after skinning and deboning] .
What are your recipes for Thanksgiving and Christmas meals?

Baby formula

Baby formula

We all have heard of the baby formula shortage by now…   some say it is intentional, others say it is just happenstance. I don’t know for sure which it is and don’t really care. The important part is that there is a shortage. BTW Breast feeding is best as it helps pass on Mom’s immunities and is always ready for the baby.

Home made baby formula from the 50-60s

13 oz [give or take an oz – so 12-14 oz]  evaporated WHOLE milk – depends on the size of can you get.—you can also use powdered milk and follow the directions on that product.

20 oz water [distilled is best IF you have it] in hot weather some use the home made re-hydration formula it is kinda like pedialyte or Gatorade] at http://www.preparesurvivethrive.us/re-hydration-drink/ posted below

2 level tablespoons [or 1 oz] of Karo syrup for the carbohydrates AND the Karo syrup was added because evaporated milk would cause constipation without it. The amount of syrup was adjusted according to the contents of the baby’s diaper.

Heat to 160 F then pour into 6-8 bottles and refrigerate until needed.

Feed every 3-4 hours or on demand.

My wife and I used to be in the industrial baby business [she did NICU and I dealt with the mommies OB] For the ones that planned on formula and for the ones who wanted/needed formula back up, We taught similar to this recipe and IF the baby needed extra calories we would add Olive oil up to a Tbsp [15 cc] per bottle. The kids seemed to do at least as well on this as the ‘regular store bought formulas – YMMV and when in doubt, discuss it with YOUR healthcare provider as this is meant only to spark discussion and learning.

This is about the best all-around recipe for Re-Hydration drink—- this replaces Pedialyte and Gatorade / sports drinks, a lot cheaper too.
Mix as follows and you can pre-mix into unit dose packets for use while you are on the move.

In a 1 L container mix the following
1/2 teaspoon salt substitute KCl aka NU-salt
1 pinch Epson salt MaSo4–  optional add ½ tsp Himalayan salt
2 tablespoon sugar [omit to use in Jell-O, formula or instant potatoes]
Kool-aid to taste    [omit to use in Jell-O, formula or instant potatoes]
Chill and serve —

BTW, Kool-aid comes in a colorless version too for when the person is vomiting. .

It is always better to prevent de-hydration by drinking water. How much should you drink a day? It is NOT the oft repeated 8, 8 ounce glasses.  For the basic amount take your weight in pounds and divide by 2 = the number of ounces you should drink a day. This amount assumes that you are sitting at a desk. The best way to know that you are drinking enough is to check your urine. Normal healthy urine is clear to straw color with no odor. In babies we like to see 8-12 wet diapers a day. Most adults should do the same ahhh EXCEPT hopefully without the need for diapers.

Are there other recipes? Yup, just like IVs you can mix this to replace electrolytes that lab work shows are missing.

total solar eclipse

Normally travel time between Casper and Cheyenne WY is about 2.5 hours….   Many reports were that after the party broke up in Casper [when the watch party was over] it took 12-14 hours to travel the same distance due to traffic. Except for the event and the HIGH number of watchers, there was no other reason for the slow down- no traffic accident ect…   Those who made plans to stay in Casper that night found that the trip home the NEXT day did not experience any delay getting home.

The point being, PLAN routes with alternates, Have fuel and other supplies on hand to deal with most situations.

On Monday, August 21, 2017, a total solar eclipse of the sun darkened the late morning skies of a large swath of the United States, including Wyoming. The center of the path of the eclipse, meaning the place where it’s the darkest, ran right through the middle of the Cowboy State.

The path went through the center of Wyoming from just south of Yellowstone National Park, straight over Casper, Wyoming, and then into Nebraska north of Cheyenne near Torrington. The eclipse began at 10:22 AM Mountain Time, and the darkest part of the event passed over Casper at 11:42 AM.

Being in the direct path of the event brought thousands of people to Wyoming that August day in 2017. Not only because total solar eclipses are rare events and have hardcore fans that travel the world to experience and document them. It was also a big deal because according to Space.com, “…it’s rare for one to be visible to so many people across such a populated swath of the planet.”

“At times, Cheyenne was looking more like Denver with traffic congestion along Interstate 25,” is what The Associated Press said about that day in Wyoming. More than half a million vehicles drove into, and back out of, Wyoming that day.

123 countries affected 145,374 confirmed cases Over 5,429 deaths Recovered 71, 712 Most likely to spread within the first 3 days of symptoms, less infectious after 7 days. Containment and eradication are expensive Doubles about every 5 days China 8 new cases yesterday 80,000 + confirmed cases, 115,000 x 67 = 7.7 million 3 weeks earlier number of cases reduced by 95% Locking down, social distancing, contact tracing WHO Europe in now the epicentre More new daily cases than China at the peak of their outbreak Countries must take a comprehensive approach Testing Contact tracing Quarantine Social distancing Do it all Any country, “that won’t happen to us” is making a deadly mistake. China, the Republic of Korea, Singapore, aggressive testing, contact tracing, social distancing, community mobilization Investigation of clusters is a critical step in reducing transmission. First, prepare and be ready. Know the signs and symptoms and how to protect themselves and others. Every health worker should be able to recognize this disease, provide care and know what to do with their patients. Every health facility should be ready to cope with large numbers of patients, and ensure the safety of staff and patients. Second, detect, protect and treat. You can’t fight a virus if you don’t know where it is. Find, isolate, test and treat every case, to break the chains of transmission. Every case we find and treat limits the expansion of the disease. Third, reduce transmission. Do not just let this fire burn. Isolate the sick and quarantine their contacts. In addition, measures that increase social distancing such as cancelling sporting events may help to reduce transmission. These measures, of course, should be based on local context and risk assessment, and should be time-limited. Even if you cannot stop transmission, you can slow it down and save lives. And fourth, innovate and learn. This is a new virus and a new situation. We’re all learning, and we must all find new ways to prevent infections, save lives, and minimize impact. Clean your hands regularly with an alcohol-based rub or soap and water Cover your mouth and nose with your elbow if you cough or sneeze. Stay home if you’re sick. Avoid unnecessary travel and large social gatherings. Comply with the advice of your local or national health authority. Find and share reliable information.

Disaster Tips COMMS

Disaster Tips for People COMMS

Most of us have and use cell phones. They ARE convenient as they do connect people rapidly when they are on the go! MOST OF THE TIME!  We often hear that in a wide spread disaster or general emergency when the voice network of the phones is overloaded that we should instead use the text feature as they have a better chance of getting through, RIGHT?     This may not be true all the time.

COMMUNICATION requires a few things to actually happen. There has to be a sender, a message, the medium the message travels through AND a receiver.  I think most of can agree on this concept. RIGHT?

Take 2 people standing in an open field 200 yards apart and facing away from each other to start out. Person A finds something of interest, turns around and yells at the other person B but the wind is blowing so person B does NOT hear person A.     Has communication taken place? There was the sender person A, there was a medium voice and air, but person B did not receive the message and did not even know it had been sent. SO, NO, there was no communication taking place.

As an example with cell phones say you type or talk a message, hit send but for some reason it does not end up at the other person’s phone – did you actually communicate? NOPE!

Over the last several days I have talked with many people who have texted friends and only some of the messages have gotten to the intended recipients. They have used a few different carriers so this issue is not isolated to just one cell service. They HAVE most likely been routed through a few common cell towers though.  We had it happen to use just today again with a family member. We texted and she did not respond. We picked her up and had been driving several minutes when the reply text came in. [at least it did finely show up].  People that I have talked with this week one of them said they had sent a group text and only half received it. I have had voice mail take several days to show up! I have sent something to my spouse sitting in the same room before and had it show up a WEEK later or not at all.

The point of all this is that you do not have a clue about the message if you don’t get it. And just because you hit send does not equal the other person getting it. Voice conversations may or may not be possible on cell phones for whatever reason, but radio communications [depending on conditions and range] once established you at least know that they heard you.

06:30 AM to 07:30 AM
(GMT-07:00) Mountain Time (US & Canada)

Notes
it has been 5 years [in 2016] and will take another 40 years to finish pulling the fuel out– which will stop further contamination…. this does not account for cleaning up what has already leaked. ;[

Well it has now been 8 years and there is still radioactive gunk leaking of the reactors. I have seen pictures over the years of the mutations of both plants and animals [sea life] as a result of the leaks. What have YOU seen and how has this changed your life?

Side Pork and Mormon Gravy

Cooking from scratch is something most of us need to get back to doing. Here is an old family favorite … Please share some of you recipes.

Side Pork and Mormon Gravy
Mormon gravy, common fare among the early settlers and apparently a creation of necessity expressly for the times, is still hearty and nourishing for many of this generation who like to make it with ground beef or frizzled ham or bacon and serve it over baked potatoes.
8 thick slices side pork (or thick-cut bacon strips)
4 tablespoons meat drippings
3 tablespoons flour
2 cups milk
Salt, pepper, paprika
Cook meat on both sides in heavy frying pan until crisp. Remove from pan and keep warm. Measure fat and return desired amount to skillet. Add flour and brown slightly. Remove from heat and add milk, stirring well to blend. Return to heat and cook and stir until mixture is thick and smooth. Season to taste. Serve with side pork on potatoes, biscuits, cornbread, or even pancakes.
