Halloween NOW

Halloween NOW

Halloween is HERE!

Drive slow tonight, keep your eyes open, IF you are in costume take your mask OFF while you drive, WATCH OUT for the kids….

Parents – go with your kids, everyone needs a light of some kind on them so drivers can see them, kids watch both ways for traffic. Kids do NOT eat any of the candy until your parents have checked it over – it is not safe like it used to be when I was a kid or even when my kids were little.

This is a good time to stock up on some things. Typically whatever does not sell at full price will be put on clearance to clean out that section of the store for something else.

GO later tonight or first thing in the morning to get candy on clearance!

Small packages of candy would go great in your 72 hour kits and in your food storage program. The candy besides providing calories would be a welcome boost for everyone’s moral during an emergency. The hard candies store well in your car too.

The snap lights that you bend and shake to activate are wonderful for safety any time of the year. We carry some in out bug out bags and in the car too.

The costume makeup would come in handy for school plays and such.

Much of the stuff goes on clearance for 50% to 75% off late that night or early the next day. This would also go for Thanksgiving and Christmas too. Good time to get cheap decorations for next year.

Storage tip long term bags

Long term storage tip

How to seal stuff air tight for long term storage. One of the better long term storage containers IF it is going to be kept in a dark space is plastic or Mylar. This will keep both air and liquids either in or out depending on what you want. The hard part is sealing the container. If you are using plastic bags or Mylar bags they will store for a very long time. If you are freezing something make sure that you leave a little bit of empty space for expansion BUT get as much air out as you can before sealing the bag.

How to seal the bag? You can spend and get a dedicated device such as a seal a meal or vacuum sealer which can be expensive when new which unless you are doing a lot of it can be cost prohibitive.

You can build a dedicated device out of wood and a clothing iron. This is more economical but can take up a lot of space. In essence you take 2 2x4s however long so that you have a bit of extra length to play with.

What you will need- 2 pieces of 2 x 4 about 2 feet long, 4-5 inch C clamp, a door hinge and screws, a drill, saw and a screw driver. How you build it – cut to length, match them up so that when constructed you will sandwich the Mylar or plastic bag between the 2 x 4s, place the door hinge so that the 2 pieces of wood will articulate like a door opens and closes, mark the spots for the screws and drill pilot holes. Place the screws.

HOW to use – fill the bag leaving enough empty so that the jaws of 2 x 4s can close AND leave about an inch of the bag sticking out, fold this over to the side with the sheet of aluminum foil over it which protects the iron when you seal the bag. Set the iron to medium heat and slowly run it along the flap. Test the seal to make sure it worked. You may have to move faster or slower or adjust the temp up or down depending on the quality of the seals.

Depending on what you are storing you can now toss the package in the freezer, on the shelf or take it out and bury it.

If you are only going to do a few packages you can use a hair curling iron and use it as above.

Food storage long term ideas

Quick ideas for long term food storage.

The question was asked —
What is the best kind of food to stock up that lasts for years?

Some folks would suggest freeze dried foods such – well you know the major brands and those ARE good to have some of BUT not when you are short of money and just starting out due to the expense.
Use what you store and store what you use.

Keep in mind that there IS a limit on how much you can store, after all YOU can not print money like national governments do. You will need to resupply at some point and be sustainable.

Better suggestions are : I’d raised turnips and different beans , corn, peas and carrots in a garden . anything else that you need to be free of having to go to a store. this is what my parents lived in the depression they had hogs to kill in the late fall. they had a smokehouse to do the hogs in.
OR
whole wheat berries NOT flour, white rice, pasta, salt, white sugar, beans of all kinds, popcorn, whole field corn…. all of this stores for years in 2L coke bottles along with water.. spices….. AND … live traps to get breading stock. rat traps for right away eating. PS learn how to save seeds wild craft / guerrilla or covert gardening. and fruit trees

Boston Brown Bread

Boston Brown Bread

1/2 cup graham or stone ground whole wheat flour
1/2 cup rye flour
1/2 cup yellow cornmeal
1/2 teaspoon baking powder
1/4 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 cup sour cream, plain yogurt, or buttermilk
1/2 cup molasses
1/4 cup water
1/2 cup raisins (optional)
Butter for buttering the inside of the cans
-Preheat the oven to 350 degrees with the rack placed in the lower third. Generously butter and dust with flour one 28-ounce can (or two 15 1/2-ounce cans).
-Put a kettle of water on to a boil.
-In a large bowl, fork together graham and rye flours, cornmeal, baking powder, baking soda, and salt. Stir in sour cream, molasses, and water. Fold in any raisins.
-Pour batter into buttered/floured can.
-Put can in a deep saucepan or #10 (gallon tin) can with a tight-fitting lid (foil is OK) and add enough boiling water to come halfway up the sides of the can.
-Cover the saucepan and bake until a cake tester inserted in the center comes out clean, about 1 1/4 hours for 28-ounce bread or about 55 minutes for 15 1/2-ounce breads.
-Remove can from water and let cool slightly on a wire rack.
-Turn out bread, shaking can if necessary to loosen.
-Return to rack to cool completely.
This is a heavy dense bread but it’s batter bread and very simple to make. It goes well with Boston Baked Beans and I like it with an egg and many people like it with franks.

This can be cooked in an open fire too, like a camp fire. All the grains can be ground by hand, blender or a magic bullet grinder ..

SAR markings

Search and rescue
Markings.

The first line for the X is made BEFORE you enter the structure, at this time you would also place YOUR rescue team or group ID. CPD 3/

You will want to make this big enough to be seen from a distance such as from the street and do not put it on the door as the door can be removed to be used as a stretcher or something.

After your team comes out of the structure you will make the second line of the X \ and write the date and time in 24 hour clock on TOP of the X

You will end up with makings which will look something like this;
2018-Oct-15 0700

CPD3 X GL
0 DB

At the bottom would the number of living or dead bodies inside. Example DB dead bodies, LB for live bodies or survivors.

** in the NOTES section you can add any resources found IF that is of interest to your group for later. F for food and W for safe water example they have a row or however many shelves with cases of bottled water OR 2L coke bottles of water.

Your local group may decide on specific verbiage that will be used but this is the generally accepted format when you see it used on the news or real life.

What to use to make the marks? Some groups use spray paint which lasts a LONG time, others use “permeant’ markers which will fade after several months or Crayons. I have even heard of some specifying the colors to be used, I do not find this to be practical for the most part as you may not have the colors available.

IF you are the ones making the search of buildings because nobody else is available you must be extremely careful [and it would be best for someone -the more the better- in your family / group should attend a CERT class in your area- contact your fire department and they can give you more information about local happenings] a search team generally consist of 4 to 6 people. 1 to 3 people STAY outside to provide back up and over watch in case things go wrong. The 1st person in stays just inside the door to keep an eye on the others who enter, during this process everyone will be looking at all 6 sides of the room -news [north, east, west and south] along with the floor and ceiling. The 2nd & 3rd person to enter calls out in a loud voice to anyone who may be in the building if there is any response the survivors should be told to “come here to the front door”. If this happens the survivors should be questioned about the safety and generally about the building and then told to either wait here or go outside to the others. Using any information obtained to direct your search OR if nobody answered after several shouts then you will start a systematic search of the building. Start either to the right or the left whatever your group has agreed on and go room to room on that floor. Mark each room as you enter and exit it similar to the outside markings. Pause often listen, call out to survivors and listen again. If you hear anything try to triangulate the sound between you, shining light at the sound. Once you have cleared all the rooms on the 1st floor go to the next floor up and follow the same procedure, ect for each floor and then basement assuming that there are more than the ground floor. During this you of course will maintain contact via radio reporting to all of you search team. Usually CERT teams operate on ch1 of FRS/GMRS radios.

Keep good records of all this to report to emergency services personnel or your coordinator for follow up when the professionals arrive. Do the best you can for the victims.

###

There is a secondary system that uses a triangle that YOU can use to communicate with members of your family group. This is part of an established communications and evacuation plan in your family group.
There are 5 or 6 basic factors to show in this.
In the outside area on the upper left you put the number of days after the event that you arrived.
In the outside area on the upper right you put the number of days you stayed at this spot.
Under the triangle you would put the number of people you arrived with and separated by a slash / you would list the number of people you left with.
In the center of the triangle you would put the number from your evac plan of your destination.
In this example EB9 is the call sign of the person who left the sign.
IF you put an M on it there is a message for you, if there is not an M then they did not leave one.

So it would look something like this with a triangle around the 6

0 2
6 EB9 M
5 / 4

You arrived with 5 people at this rendezvous or rally point ON the day of the event and you stayed 2 days and left with 4 people. M = you left a written message- in this case your family group has agreed that written messages are put on the right side of the structure or the big tree, whatever your group decides. You can use whatever container you would like to weather proof the message such as a jar, zip loc bag or lay’s chip container- whatever is available or write it in crayon on the structure.

You will want to make this big enough to be seen from a distance such as from the street, but do not make it massive.

Some groups may designate a specific color [s] to mean something or person, I do not find this to be as useful as you may not have that color available to you at the time.

Civil War coming?

Civil War coming?

Safety wise, things have been going down hill in these United States of America for a long time. In the view of many the 8 years of the last president saw an intentional sabotage of US, a few others still think that was great times. I for one did not think that George W Bush was the best either especially with the Ethanol bill he signed May of 2005 but that can wait for another time….

Trump got into office because MOST Americans wanted real change .. the economy does seem to be better than the last 20 years and there are more jobs available.

America is also more divided now than the last 20 years which is NOT Trump’s fault. He is doing what he was hired to do, drain the swamp. The swamp does not like this. Some that drag their feet and go along to get along and justify their offices and the high pay and benefits don’t like it simply because they are lazy. They don’t like Trump because he IS getting things done in spite of the sloth in Congress. Others are actively resisting draining the swamp because it is exposing their corruption and graft.

Regardless of the above, things are heating up and everyone needs to pay attention to what is going on. We are getting closer to the midterm elections and I expect things to be really bad around that time. There are already riots aka peaceful protests with beatings, arson and vandalism now in some big cities like Portland, OR. Some say this is grass root protests others say it is lead by professional community organizers. I do not know although I do have my thoughts on it. The important point is that regardless of the side you take in it people are getting hurt already. This is going to be worse than after the 2016 elections.

At the bottom of this post is a current story in the news with a link to the original report which prompted this rant.

Get out there and VOTE… I will not comment on which way to vote beyond saying that I will not support anyone or party that threatens me to get my vote.

What to do about things this time around?

If you can vote early or absentee so that you are not near the polls on November 6th DO IT.

Review your communications and emergency plans NOW and get everyone in your family up to speed on things. http://www.preparesurvivethrive.us/comms-part-1/

Double check your supplies and provisions and stock up on what you will need to shelter in place for at least the week of and after the election.

You should always have at least ¾ tank of fuel, but I would top off Monday before the election. IF you have to be out of town you will need to have a paper map with the main route home marked on it and a get home bag.

Get the last minute milk and bread too.

Talk with your pharmacy by the Friday before the election about any refills you are going to need for election week – sometimes they do not have enough on hand and will have to order it in.

This advice is only a bit stronger to prepare than I would give when you know a blizzard or hurricane is on the way to your area.

Where’s the outrage over Hillary’s call for a ‘civil’ war?
By Michael Goodwin
October 9, 2018 | 10:20pm | Updated
Hillary Clinton is still finding ways to denigrate democracy
Kavanaugh’s hearings are a national disaster — and the worst is yet to come

Two events from the last two days stand out. The first came Monday night with President Trump’s forceful yet compassionate speech at the swearing in of Brett Kavanaugh to the Supreme Court.
The president opened with an extraordinary apology on behalf of the country to Kavanaugh and his family “for the terrible pain and suffering” they endured during the historically brutal confirmation process. He said the unfounded allegations violated fairness and “the presumption of innocence.”
Trump also tenderly addressed Kavanaugh’s young daughters, telling them “your father is a great man, a man of decency, character, kindness and courage.”
The event was something of a spike-the-football moment in front of a cheering White House audience and as such was a clever piece of stagecraft, where Republican Sens. Mitch McConnell, Charles Grassley, Lindsey Graham and Susan Collins were saluted.
But the ceremony was much more than mere boosterism. With the eight other Supremes sitting in the front row, Trump aimed to restore dignity to the judiciary at a time when the dirtiest tricks of politics have buried the court in a mountain of mud.
The president is right to worry that the character-assassination attempt on Kavanaugh may turn out to be a seminal moment in American political and cultural history. The ideas that the court is just another political branch and that the presumption of innocence no longer applies if you are on the other team represent a seismic shift in how we look at each other and the nation as a whole.
If those ideas stick, we are in more trouble than we can imagine.
And while Trump has at times unnecessarily contributed to the rancor, he was terrific Monday in trying to repair what Senate Democrats and their media handmaidens tried to destroy.
Which brings me to the second event of note: Hillary Clinton’s statement Tuesday that Democrats “cannot be civil” as long as Republicans hold the White House and Congress.
“You cannot be civil with a political party that wants to destroy what you stand for, what you care about,” Clinton told CNN. “That’s why I believe, if we are fortunate enough to win back the House and/or the Senate, that’s when civility can start again. But until then, the only thing that the Republicans seem to recognize and respect is strength.”
There you have it — a declaration of war and a license for violence. Where is the media outrage?
Clinton knows we are already in the danger zone when it comes to the political temperature. Her comments, then, are as reckless as bringing a can of gasoline to a bonfire.
She’s stoking trouble to gain a foothold in the 2020 race — and damn the consequences.
Her claim that civility can return when Dems have power is an admission that the ends justify the means.
Then again, she never fails to disappoint. As I wrote Sunday, she has spent the last two years casting doubt on the legitimacy of the Trump presidency because the election didn’t go her way. That makes her guilty of the very thing she found “horrifying” when Trump suggested he might not abide by the results if he thought they were rigged.
“He is denigrating — he is talking down our democracy. And I am appalled that someone who is the nominee of one of our two major parties would take that position,” she said in their final debate, in October 2016.
She added, “That is not the way our democracy works.”
But it does work exactly that way when Democrats are denied what they feel entitled to. They should be careful what they wish for.
For if the Kavanaugh experience revealed anything, it is that Trump’s GOP knows how to fight back and win. It is hard to imagine that Kavanaugh would have survived such an onslaught under any other recent Republican candidate or president.
There were so many reasons, and so much media pressure, that it would not have been surprising if a bloc of senators called the allegations a “distraction” and waved a white flag. They didn’t because Trump and Kavanaugh didn’t back down.
Still, there is danger when two sides both think they can outlast the other. Responding to my concern that America might be sleepwalking into a second civil war, a number of readers agreed. Some said they welcomed it.
Curt Doolittle wrote this: “We aren’t sleepwalking into it, we know exactly what we’re doing and why. The hard right and hard left are planning on it, ready for it, and looking for an opportunity.”
He said the pressure has been building and that “the only reason it hasn’t turned hot is the outlier of Trump’s election. If Clinton had won, we’d already be there.”

Do they have the same passion for public safety and good schools? Do they care as much about the unfairness of the tax system?
My fear is that they don’t, and that their intensity about narrow issues is a fig leaf hiding their surrender on broad ones. There are superlatives for that, too.
Disgraceful, cowardice and shameful come to mind.

soap making from scratch

soap making from scratch

Hygiene and sanitation are NOT optional especially in a grid down or emergency situation.

Some research says around 44% of DEATHS are related to diarrhea and could be prevented by simply washing your hands with soap and water.

The supplies of soap would last for awhile after a SHTF or SNAP event. Most of our grandparents lived 24/7 without much of a grid up time. They could and would create their own hygiene products from available ingredients. It is relatively easy to make your own products.

There is archaeological evidence for soap making at least for the last 5,000 years for not only cleaning our selves and cloth but also for medical reasons. Most social groups in later years have divided the labor with some of us specializing in certain duties like healthcare, bakers and smiting, however most people knew how to make their own bread and soap.

The chemical reactions between fat with a base of alkali such as lye or sodium hydroxide to make soap, the process is known as saponification. Fat is easy to find as you can use rendered animal fat or vegetable oils. On the other hand lye made from either sodium or potassium hydroxide can be found in hardware or farm supply stores. Lye for soap making has other household uses and USED to be in all the grocery and big box stores on the shelf next to the drain cleaners. This is harder to find because of the misuse of it in making METH. It is possible with some work to make your own lye water at home.

Making lye water — Caution lye and lye water is CAUSTIC and can eat through metal, clothing and most importantly it can eat through YOU.. safety glasses, rubber gloves and a water proof apron at all times when dealing with lye… keep animals and small children away from lye. Be careful and it is a good idea to have baking soda on hand to neutralize the lye and running water to wash yourself and dilute the lye.

things you will need to gather up for this;
distilled water – rain water is great for this
wood ashes from your fire- hard woods are best be sure it is well burnt to a white ash.
A container with very small holes which let the lye water through but not the solids.
A 2nd container to catch and hold the lye water as it flows from the 1st. NOTE NEVER use aluminum for either as it will react badly with the lye.
***A discussion on containers, historically they were made out of wood or clay, seldom metal and of course NEVER aluminum. Today stainless steel or plastic will work OK. ***
Line the bottom of the top or straining container with grass, hay or straw, over this goes a layer of washed sand. Pack the rest of the top container up to within 3-4 inches of the top with the wood ashes.

Set the first container with the ashes INTO the 2nd whole bucket. Next pour rain or distilled water SLOWLY into the ash bucket. This MAY be around half a bucket more or less. This will take a while to saturate the ash and fill up the containers to within 3 inches of the BOTTOM container – do not over fill. Once the water has totally soaked into the ash and will not take anymore, use the remaining water for the garden or laundry ect. Go about your business for a couple of days.

With the assistance of another person lift the ash bucket while the other person puts wood boards between the containers so that the water in the ash can will drip down into the catchment basin. Go about your business for several hours. After this you will have a brownish fluid in the catchment basin.

Place the ash container on top of another catchment container as above and slowly pour the lye water through the ashes and let drip. Repeat this step 6 or more times.

How do I know when the lye is strong enough? When a fresh egg which will sink in distilled or rain water, will float in the lye water. Another way to know is if a chicken feather will dissolve in the lye water. You can concentrate the lye water by letting it evaporate for awhile until the egg floats.

What to do with the left over ashes? Spread them out on the driveway to dry and then scatter it in the garden in the fall or around fruit trees. Another way to deal with it is to let it dry and then spread it on icy side walks or other slippery spots.

Collecting fat

The other half of soap is some kind of fat. This can be either animal or plant fats.

If you want a good lather plant based oils are most likely better. Animal fat soap does not lather as well but does clean good and can be used to wash clothing.. When I shave I use a straight razor and I like ‘Granny’s” lye soap better than store bought.

To render animal fat you will need ; animal fat, cast iron or other metal container, a cutting board and a couple of very sharp knives and a couple of liters of potable water.

Procedure for rendering animal fat; assemble your supplies in convenient spot. Pour a few inches of water into the pan you plan to render the fat in. cube the fat into ½ to 1 inch chunks putting them into the pot as you go. Once the pot is full to with in 2 inches of the top put it onto the stove or other heat source just a bit above simmer to a very slow boil until all or most of the fat has come out of the fat tissue. Maybe 4 hours. Strain out the particulate matter and use this in soups or other food products you plan to eat or give it to your puppies. Set the product in a frig or other cool/cold place to set up. Once the fat has set and is hard carefully remove the hard fat from the jelly bottom and place this in a stew pot and use at your next meal.

Repeat the proceeding until all of the fat that you planned has been rendered.

Take the rough fat that you have collected and put it into a clean pot big enough to hold it all and slow or low boil it with a couple inches of water in the pan. Once totally melted put it some place to harden. Once hardened remove the now clean fat to a clean container. This fat is now ready to make soap.

Wooden molds or a glass pan lined with saran wrap work to hold the soap once it is made while it cures.

Recipe

in a non reactive container [ wood, glass or stainless steel NEVER aluminum ] place 3 cups of melted fat [around 100 degrees F] SLOWLY add 1 cup of warm 100 degree F lye water while stirring with a dedicated wooden spoon. Continue stirring until the solution becomes thick. The stirring allows the saponification [the chemical reaction that makes soap] to happen. Once it is thick enough to ‘trace’ like melting ice cream, you can draw in it and see the pattern for a few minutes as it slumps down to a flat surface.

At the trace point you can pour it into your mold. Cover with towels in a safe place where it will not be disturbed for a couple of days. [At this point cut it into usable size bars] Longer [4 to 6 weeks] is better but is most likely OK to use after 2 -3 days of making it.

Each batch of soap made with homemade lye water will be slightly different in results. Practice until you get a feel for it.

Once you get the hang of the basic process you can start adding other stuff to your soap or other oils.

You can add essential oils for smell good or medicinal herbs for better cleaning. As an example Plantain broad leafed is reputed to be an antiseptic.

In the field you can clean your cooking gear with wood ash and water and rinse well. You can also use Yucca leaf pulp for camp clean up or even bathing. Don’t throw the leaves away after such use as you can rinse them out and make cordage from the fibers.
