Election report 2020

Election report 2020

Well, as I type this on Veteran’s Day, the election has NOT been declared one way nor the other. NONE of the states have CERTIFIED the votes. YET.  The media can call it anyway that they want BUT that is NOT the legal determination. The media does not have the legal power to decide.

Remember back in 2000 Bush V Gore? Recounts, hanging chads, court involvement and all that stuff. It does not matter which side of the issue anyone is on for this discussion. Half of the population will be happy and the rest not so much. There is going to be recounts and court challenges for the next month ish…. THEN on December 14th [this time- there is a formula to figure it out during other elections] the electoral college votes and they will pick who will be presented to Congress to vote for on January 6th. This happens EVERY time there is a presidential election, NOT just this time.

THE most important issue to be protected is the perception by the American public that the process can be trusted. Right now many don’t trust the system. Time will tell as to the results of the election and what happens over the next year or so.

Interesting how many places have had riots most nights for the last several months [Portland OR for example] and this last week strangely silent. Kinda like the calm before a big storm. Regardless of how the process outlined above shakes out it would be best to be ready to shelter in place and have what you will need to limit the times you have to go out in public.

The jury is still out ref the Human Malware Program-19 .  Regardless of what the reality is, during the winter or cold months, there are things we should ALL be doing. WASH your hands often, cover your coughs, PROPER use of PPE [personal protective equipment]  AND if you are sick STAY home and away from others. Talk with YOUR healthcare provider about your specific concerns.

Stores are starting to limit how much of each product you can buy AGAIN due to current shortages. HUMMMm    guess we ALL should have been stocking up  RIGHT?

Paper towels, TP for example. So far I have not heard of limits on food YET.  BUT there are shortages of SOME foods already or is it still?  I would make sure that you have shelf stable foods to last for a LONG blizzard, read back over what we have discussed the last several years. Talk with you healthcare provider about what medications you need to have on hand. There are entries which suggest areas for discussion with your healthcare provider. One thing is for sure… prices on everything are going up.

What are your thoughts and concerns during the current times??  Post them in the comments section below.

Veteran’s Day 2020

Yesterday was the birthday of the USMC – 1775-11-10

We intentionally are combining that with Veteran’s Day this year.

This date in history… the 11th hour on the 11th day of the 11th month of 1918 was the last day of World War One…… This was actually before we had to start numbering them. Back then it was simply the Great [meaning BIG] War aka the War to end wars… How sadly wrong they ended up being…

Commemorated in many countries as Armistice Day the following year, November 11th became a federal holiday in the United States in 1938. In the aftermath of World War II and the Korean War, Armistice Day became known as Veterans Day.

On this day and every day please remember and pray for OUR troops deployed or at home. Past, present and future! Keep in mind that their family supported their service.

PLEASE, be the kind of Americans who are worthy of the sacrifices….

To our brothers and sisters in arms….   Remember your oath….

USMC Birthday 2020

Happy Birthday Marines!

See you on Veteran’s Day 2020!

Semper Fi!

Revolutionary Result

The US Marine Corps started as the Continental Marines on November 10, 1775. On that date, the Second Continental Congress decided that they needed 2 battalions of Marines to serve as landing forces with the Continental Navy during the American Revolutionary War (1775–1783).

After the war, the Continental Navy was dismantled, and as a consequence the Marines as well. However, after increasing conflict with revolutionary France, the Marine Corps was formally re-established.

US Marine Corps Today

The United States Marine Corps is the US Armed Forces’ combined-arms task force on land, at sea, and in the air. It has more than 180,000 active duty personnel as well as almost 40,000 personnel in the Marine Corps Reserve.

Tomorrow is Veteran’s day where we honor ALL of our Veterans.

Election EVE

Election EVE

OK folks things seem to be heating up. First Wal-Mart pulled ALL of the guns and ammo from their displays  last week “in case there were rioting going on” then Friday they put most of them back on display except in the worst areas.  Friday a friend in Madison WI reported that the stores downtown were boarding up their windows getting ready for the election riots.  Getting similar reports from other places around the country.  Many police departments have cancelled days off, vacations ect for one to two weeks surrounding the elections.  And then there is this head line–New York City luxury buildings hire armed guards for possible Election Day unrest. Them that can afford that would do well to have that in place all over.  In my area listening to the police calls  there are more and more calls stacked up WAITING for an officer to become available and often when they get dispatched the call is ended with the dispatcher saying “I will send back up as soon as I can”.  Folks that is very concerning to many of us as it shows how over loaded the system is getting.  It IS bad now and I believe that it will get much worse regardless of who ‘wins’ Tuesday. It will be bad at least till spring.

But what are the rest of us going to do?

Top up your vehicle this morning on the way to work OR tonight on the way to get stuff.

It is NOT too late to organize with those who live near you.  You can still go to the big box stores and buy stuff. Get last minute stuff as if it were going to blizzard for the next 1 – 6 months. While you are there get a couple of CB radios antennas, AND cigarette lighter plug in so you can power the CB in your vehicles.  Also get a few of those blister pack FRS/GMRS radios AND if they have them a mobile radio to go with them. IF they have scanner radios get one of those too. Do you have a good AM/FM radio or 2. Gathering information will be vital in the coming months. Charge and check ALL of your communications devices. Make sure they are all programmed correctly and that everyone knows how to use them. Finalize your communications plan. What if the net goes down? Do NOT depend on only your cell phones nor just one or 2 social media sites to communicate with friends / family.

Review your bug out plan and fine tune it. Where are you going? How are you getting there-transportation- AND routes?

Security issues- when things are going on in your area you will need at least one person on FIRE watch 24/7.  They can also monitor the radios.  Should things locally continue down hill you will have to set up stronger security arrangements  3 or more people to do this. One person to stay at the Comms center / command post and the other 2 to patrol or stand guard.  What does that look like for you?  Could need 12 people for this. Which leads to how do you / they get sleep, eat and take care of other bodily functions?  How does the rest of what you have to get done, get done? What is everyone’s work load?

Please let us know about things in your areas and ideas to address your concerns. Reply below.

OK folks we are getting down to the wire.

On national radio reports are the some groups are planning a peaceful protest called take over DC for next week… How true that is IDK….   But I would plan as if it will happen and be worse than expected.

Top up with fuel Thursday on your way home.  Get the stuff you will need for the next week or 2 fresh. Get refills of any medication you will need in case the pharmacy gets closed for some reason.

How are your shoes? Do you have enough warm socks? How about gloves? How about warm blankets?

Civil unrest some more.

As I write [type] this it is less than 30 days till the 2020 elections.  We have been having a great deal of civil unrest this year [some places 100 days of rioting] along with the health issues of Cov id nineteen aka The human mal-ware program 19 aka THMP19.

The first Presidential ‘debate ‘has happened….   Both sides think their guy won. From where I sit I do not see that anyone’s mind was changed…    Time will tell

Regardless of who ‘wins’ the popular election in November we still have to wait for the electoral college vote this year on December 14th for the real selection of President. And then on January 20th someone will be seated as president.

Between now and November election day things will continue to heat up. When the winner is announced half the people will be happy and want to party and the other half will continue to riot. By the end of January, things will most likely be REALLY bad and wont get better until at least spring 2021 after we get our gardens established for the year.

Many places have reported marked shortages of foods. Part of this was already happening before THMP19 raised its ugly head. Regardless of how or why, there IS a shortage in the stores even today. The shortages are both in amount of food available and the variety of those foods…. I do not see that getting any better until at least summer 2021. so start planning your gardens and order some of your seeds NOW! Consider fruit trees and other perennials.

At least one radio talk show has already announced that they will be staying home election day to avoid down town [Portland OR] during the expected riots.

***WHAT to do between now and the election? FIRST take care of VOTING NOW, so that it is over and done with for you! VOTE for or against whoever you want, but get R done!***

Stock up on medications [talk with your doctor NOW], food, water and toilet paper NOW, while you can! Get at least 2 months ahead so that you will not have to be out the weekend before nor the week of the elections.  Each and EVERY Thursday top off your vehicle fuel supply. Also go to your bank and get the CASH you will need for the next week- cash is king in a disaster. Double check your supplies and provisions. — in the week prior to election day decide what you will need to ride out for at least that week and get it on hand.

Review your emergency plans- particularly SAFETY including fire fighting plans. Review your communication and evacuation plans. DRIVE your planned routes. Finalize your go bags.  Make sure you have back up power systems in place for your phones, computers and radios.

Consider ordering 2 books that will help you get ready EVEN when time is short. 72 hour kits or Bug Out Bags are just the start of being prepared. BOBs and how to make them are covered too along with other concerns like communications, skill sets and team selection concerns, health and safety issues are explored.

In short, this will quickly get you started on the road to preparedness and provident living.   https://www.amazon.com/Ready-Not-Things-WILL-Happen-ebook/dp/B00J6PO0J2/ref=sr_1_4?dchild=1&keywords=Richard+Calton&qid=1601832216&sr=8-4

Prepping count down

Prepping count down

At this point we have about 2.5 months  or about 75 days to decide what we are going to do as things get worse with both the Human  Malware Program 19 [Rona or Covid-19 as it is more commonly known] and the pending election-regardless of which ‘side’ wins. And what we have to do to be ready to deal with the civil unrest as it gets worse. In November/December it will get REALLY bad …

Many people are of the belief that we have to get out of the cities, PERIOD.  There is merit to that thought.  I do not think that is a bad idea at all. BUT where to go? Small towns OFF the main roads where you already have connections.  That would be a good idea IF you have it arranged ahead of time [now]. YOU have to decide IF you have time  and place to move to..   Unless you are independently wealthy, how are you going to make a living? Are your friends / family on board with you showing up there? Did you put supplies and food there ahead of time??

Some other conventional :wisdom” is that short of having  a place set up for you to move to is the idea that you go “camping” to a national forest or park starting 2 weeks before the elections in November.  Great idea!???! Humm this year we still had snow falling in June and can expect some more in October.. YEP, that is my idea of FUN taking the family [with kids] to an unsecured area with little to no pre-positioned “stuff” . How are you going to stay warm, hydrated and fed?

What will happen with all your stuff you left behind? Well most likely it is gone. I am NOT saying that you should never plan on bugging out. Of course not! All big ships have life boats in case they HAVE to abandon ship. BUT bug out is a last ditch plan that you DO need to be ready to do. Discuss your plan now with family and be ready to do what you have to.

OK, so you/we are stuck where ever we are at. WHAT DO WE DO while we wait?

Start with a threat assessment. What are the dangers you face now and projected in the near future 3-6 months? How much food and water will you need to get through 6-10 months with NO re-supply available? You should already have been JOURNALING what is going on and what you use daily. Project that out for however long you expect this to last. [I bet it will last longer than you think-sadly.]. Up your security, better door locks, security bars holding the doors shut and exterior lights, make sure you have 3 inch screws on ALL parts of the doors instead of the typical ½ inch ones. Stock up on food and water.    Make more friends, get to know those who live close to you. Start a neighborhood watch. Talk with the police in your area.

Work on your plan – when do you stop going to work? When do you make that last supply run? How are you going to communicate with each other, family, friends and those near you? How are you going to gather local information as things develop? Examples are scanners, CB/FRS/GMRS radios, HAM if you have a license, the UV5r or variant is good for several miles and you CAN listen to it without a license. And it can work as a scanner. See other posts for the last several years on this site. We have been talking about it for years.

COMMs part 1

We often hear about blending in. Some have suggested that you get tee shirts that plug BLM ect… that could get you into worse trouble – and for darn sure do not have Trump on anything either. BOTH draws attention to you. [have your convictions on Poly Tics that you want-AND DO VOTE, just do not display partisanship ] It is best to stay totally GRAY.

Guns and ammo/magazines  IF you feel you need them now then most likely you WILL need then later. IF on the other hand you don’t feel you need them,  you could be right. Do what you want to do on that. Some say all that makes good trade goods. Others advise ‘precious metals’ [said as Schmegal from Lord of the rings would say it ;]  I include that in with the other metals already listed in this paragraph. Do what you want on that AFTER you have food, water, medications ect…  ymmv

Bartering is time honored practice. Stock up on stuff for that AFTER everything else is set. Along this line work on SKILLS and tech books [hard copies] to make yourself more marketable and valuable. Stuff can be taken, skills can not be taken from you.

Always be working on bettering your situation! The job is NEVER done as you CAN improve everything. BEEF up your physical security!

Plant a garden. OK as I write this it is August so we are headed toward the end of growing season as far as starting plants. You CAN lay out garden beds and work on them for next year though. Combining gardening with security starts with the plan. Along the fence line Primacane [produce 1st year of growth] black berry and raspberry plants make food for you AND provide thorns to keep people out of your yard.  In the spring you can clean out the old stems from last year IF you want and the new growth replaces it. You will most likely want to keep the street side trimmed for looks and safety.  Another great hedge row is Hazel nuts. Plant them on 4 foot centers and as they grow you weave the branches together between them and after a few years they become locked together and almost impossible to get through—think hedge rows in Europe during WWII that tanks had issues getting through.

Heat injuries

Summer Safety Primer
During heat illness, the body’s cooling system shuts down due to a
lack of water and electrolytes.
Mild symptoms of heat exhaustion include thirst, fatigue, and cramps
in the legs or abdomen. Left untreated, heat exhaustion can progress
to heat stroke.

Serious heat-related symptoms include dizziness,
headaches, nausea, rapid heartbeat, vomiting, decreased alertness,
and a core temperature as high as 105 F or more.

In severe cases, the liver, kidneys, and brain may be damaged due to
the lack of water and electrolytes. About 400 people die each year
from heat exposure, according to the CDC.

The risk of heat illness goes up during exertion and sports and with
certain health conditions such as diabetes, obesity, and heart
disease. Alcohol use also increases the risk. So do medications that
slow sweat production such as antihistamines, tricyclic
antidepressants, and diuretics used to treat water retention, high
blood pressure, and some liver and kidney conditions.

People ages 65 and older and young children are especially vulnerable
to heat illness. During the summer of 2003, at least 42 children in
the United States died after being left in hot cars, according to Jan
Null, a meteorologist in San Francisco who tracks heat-related
deaths. What some people don’t realize is that the temperature inside
a car can climb much higher than temperatures outside during a sunny
day. Heat stroke in children [AND animals] can occur within minutes, even if a car
window is opened slightly. **The car becomes a `solar oven’ with
temperatures going over 200 degrees F. and sometimes into 300 degrees F.
What You Can Do
Adequate hydration is the #1 protective factor!

Re-Hydration drink

At #2 is proper clothing with headgear.

Air conditioning is the No. 3 protective factor against heat illness.

If you don’t have air conditioning, spend time in public facilities, such as libraries and
malls that have air conditioning. Reduce strenuous activities or do
them during early mornings and evenings when it’s cooler. If you’re
outside for long stretches of time, carry a water bottle, drink
fluids regularly, and don’t push your limits. People who play sports
should wear light, loose-fitting clothes and drink WATER or sports
drinks before, during, and after activity. If you see someone
experiencing heat illness, have the person lie down in a cool place
and elevate the legs. Use water, wet towels, and fanning to help cool
the person down until emergency help comes.

The number one indicator of adequate hydration is URINATION. With
infants we are told that 10-12 wet diapers a day is a good thing. And
that “depends” on your age. If you are 40 years old, one would hope
that you do not need diapers [in older folks diapers are called
depends]. BUT you should be going every 2-3 hours and your urine
should be clear to straw colored and at least 90 MLs each time. If
your urine is dark, cloudy or scant you NEED to be drinking more
water. A good formula is one liter of water, ¼ teaspoon potassium
chloride [this is a salt substitute some trade names are NU-salt, NO-
salt ECT.. Available in the seasoning section with the regular table
salt –sodium chloride] a pinch of mag sulfate—Epson salt, 2
tablespoons of sugar and Kool aid to taste. Chile and serve. This
formula is rather similar to Pedialyte or Gatorade only better and
much cheaper. — Just like you learned in our first aid class.

Response to covid 19 and a question from a friend– as a nurse have you ever seen anything like this virus?

kinda have, yes…. given the REPORTED speed of spread there only really 2 conclusions … neither path matters to most of us….[[ how so?? our response on a personal or even local level has to be the same]] IF they can pin point when/where the disease started [this fast] is if it is a bioweapon that escaped or was released….you nor I can DO anything about that, RIGHT? —–OR—— it is totally natural thing in which case it has been around for some time, spreading UNIDENTIFIED … which is actually most likely, in which case, well we just have to deal with it as is…. the ONLY way to know if someone has it is to do the testing….

JUST like the common flu—you may have ALL the signs of the flu, BUT the actual diagnosis is dependent on lab tests.  Ultimately it does NOT matter [effectively] because you still just treat the symptoms and provide supportive care.  In cases where the illness is “mild” people self treat at home and therefore do not come to medical attention. A side effect of that is even IF they have true flu, they are not counted.  SAME with the covid 19, unless or until the test comes back NOBODY ACTUALLY KNOWS how many have it. There is no effective specific treatment YET. So all that can actually be done is treat the symptoms and use standard precautions just like the flu.

TB was rampant years ago and there was an effective treatment available that sometimes took a full year. One thing I always found sadly funny was how many people were nonchalant around the patient UNTIL the tests came back and the patient was diagnosed as having TB…..   THEN the staff would “run around with their hair on fire soiling themselves” figuratively speaking and put the patient in isolation. This was sad because the staff had already been exposed. See standard precautions below.

How do the above disease spread? All 3 mostly are air bourne and surface contact. If someone coughs or sneezes, droplets go into the air [some bigger and some smaller] the bigger droplets fall sooner, smaller droplets can travel farther. We are mostly concerned with the respiratory aspects but they can enter the body other ways like mucus membranes and open wounds.

Speed of spread—nobody actually KNOWS how fast it spreads. How is this? Once again to actually deliver a definitive diagnosis you HAVE to have test results. No test no real statistics.  Until the test results are reported you only have presumptive cases. Typically there are reporting cycles for ease of explaining we will say that the reporting cycle is daily at noon.  1st report says that there are 2 confirmed cases. [they seldom report negative results in the media] . 2nd report say that there are 2 new CONFIRMED cases which would indicate that the cases have DOUBLED. OK project that out and it will sound scary. NOT everyone [total population] is tested, not every one of those who are sick get tested [because there are not enough tests nor staff to be able to do the tests]  EVEN IF the media would report ALL of the results of the tests for covid 19  [total number of tests done broken down to the number that are positive AND the number that showed negative] this would give us a better picture of how fast this spreads BUT it still is blurry at the point because we do not have large enough numbers. When we get larger numbers tested the % will change and the DEATH RATE will decrease. This still does not paint a real picture of the situation as MOST people still will not be tested even if sick and most wont go in to their doctor unless they are REALLY sick so we don’t know how many actually have the covid 19. Point being that the media to a large extent are fear mongers. You should talk with YOUR doctor to get an idea of how you should be reacting.

Standard precautions sometimes referred to as universal precautions depends on what term is in vogue in your area.  Basically the simplest explanation is treat everybody as if they have everything and then you don’t have to worry [as much]. Avoid contact with body fluids period. Don’t get any closer than is needed to accomplish what you have to do. WASH your hands well and often with plain soap and water before AND after contact, especially if you know you have been contaminated. Keep your hands away from your mucus membranes in most cases this means your face. Real sun light is your friend. The UV light deactivates most germs. Cover your [or the patient’s] cough/sneezes, keep your hands away from mucus membranes-yours and others.

Ppe when used appropriately AND correctly! Ppe can do 2 basic things depending on why you are doing it…  IF you are healthy it will help protect you IF you pay attention. If you are sick it cuts down on you contaminating others and other things.

Gloves  can be occlusive like plastic or rubber whatever for dealing with wet stuff. Can be cloth so that you can wash them after use for dry stuff  and to remind you to keep your hands away from mucus membranes.

Masks  there are several kinds we will limit this discussion to N95, surgical disposable and cloth reusable. N 95 [100] indicates the efficiency of the filtering expressed as a % removed. So 95% of the particulates [dust or germs] are removed from the air you breath IN [ so there is no such thing as more than 100% in reality] the N95 masks that I have used have a one way valve which makes it easier to exhale—exhaled air is NOT filtered at all. So do NOT waste an N95 mask thinking that it will contain the sick person’s germs.

Surgical and cloth masks do not filter much out of the air but when used as intended they are very effective for reducing the transmission of germs. How masks work, most masks just redirect the air flow to the sides which slows down the force of airflow so droplets fall or drop out ie so droplets don’t travel as far. If something splashes on you the mask should at least keep it from directly touching you and depending on how much gets on your mask it gives you time to change the mask. In the case of you being the sick person it will help contain the spray when you cough, sneeze or even talk. You may not be aware of it but every time you speak or exhale, moisture and droplets ARE coming out of you and can get on others  which is why sick folk NEED to wear masks.

Masks alone do NOT provide total protection but they DO help.

EYE protection is often needed depending on the risks. Germs CAN enter your body through your eyes. Stuff gets on your eyeball and the tears wash that stuff to the lachrymal duct into your nose, down into your mouth or into your lungs. EYE protection can be simple as your eyeglasses if you wear them everyday to see [contacts do not protect you at all]. Or you can have safety glasses that kinda look like regular glasses up through goggles which do not let any air/particles get to the eyes. There are also face shields that go over the whole face. Often people will wear the mask, glasses/goggles AND the face shield too. All depending on risks.

GOWNS or aprons  go over you to contain stuff [btw I use the term STUFF to keep from making a detailed list of all the things involved, most folks can figure out by the context. I don’t feel like typing it all out and most are not interested in reading an extra 500 words, this is not a peer reviewed article in a medical journal]

What do we do and how to prep

Supplies and provisions- stock as IF you knew there was a big blizzard coming and be ready to shelter in place for at least 2 weeks. Many folk in WY and other places only shop on a monthly basis, so maybe consider having enough to skip a shopping trip.

Everyone needs certain things like TP and dish soap, you need enough to ride out the storm but you most likely don’t need a warehouse full. Do you? Unless of course you own a store of some kind. How much you get depend totally on your assessment of how long you will have to SIP [shelter in place] BUT do it before the storm so others can get what they need too.

Keep a journal of the happenings of the day, DO include what you use each day and over a period of time you will have the information needed to project out and budget for what you need. Write down what you learned from the experience and what you wish you had known ahead of time or what you wish you had ore or less of.
